I've been looking for Nightflyers on Sky without success. It's a film based on George RR Martin's novella and I thought I'd see what it's like before the new TV series appears next year. Anyone seen it?

LIFEThis surprised me. Both thoughtful and escapist, it maintained a tension from beginning to end and was thoroughly satisfying. The opposite of the contrived Alien Covenant. I've just watched it. Hell's bells that was realistic, and very well done. I did predict the ending, but even so it was well portrayed by the whole cast. Enjoyable and chilling.

Man Down
Wow, powerful. Shia LaBeouf can be a very intense actor, and this is the most mature I've seen him but with scenes that without a word he is smoldering. This has Gary Oldman, Clifton Collins Jr. And Jai Courtney.
It's on Amazon Prime Video app.
A gripping story of a family man who belongs to the American military and is sent off to Afghanistan, but with frequent flashbacks to his life at home.
Amazing score and directing. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Highly recommended.

I'm sure that was just a coincidence! Considering Britains highest decorated soldier was also from Edinburgh as well as various other outstanding service personnel I doubt it. Edinburgh men are made of stout stuff I tell you. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Macpherson

Arbitrage
This film has stayed with me for hours after viewing it. Good score to the film, great performances and powerful moments watching people grapple with tough life choices.
Stars Richard Gere as an affable wealthy family man/tycoon trying to cope and live through a couple of really bad decisions he has made.
Tim Roth is utterly superb as the cunning cop.

Saw Arbitrage a couple of years ago and it is very well played. I remember the powerful scene between the Gere character and his daughter.

Oh ye. Good scene. I liked the one just before that too at the office when she is looking at records thinking she may have discovered something.

I finally sat down and watched Alien Covenant (in 4K) today, and I pronounce myself disappointed. It's not something I would normally complain about, but I thought the film sacrificed too much plot for pure blood and guts. They certainly outdid the infamous chest-burster from the original Alien...over and over again. I felt it was more of an attempt to replicate/surpass the original rather than progress the history of the "Alien" universe in any way, which I would have preferred, and was hoping for. It also, sadly, lacked any of the suspense of the original. At least it had a bit of Wagner. I definitely wanted a more 'cerebral' approach but it was, after all, a Ridley Scott movie.

We're off to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi tonight. In 2D, of course. Should be entertaining.

I finally sat down and watched Alien Covenant (in 4K) today, and I pronounce myself disappointed. Yup. I was underwhelmed by the The Last Jedi as well. Overly long and when I got bored I started picking holes in the errors - there's a few! I'll probably go and see it again, to give it a fair chance like I did Alien Covenant. But the first viewing left me thinking . . . nothing new there is here, this isn't the film I was looking for.
