It looked superb in the cinema.
When is Ridley Scott not on form? I've never seen a bad film of his.

Agreed he doesn't make a really bad film but has made a few mediocre ones compared his best. There was three in a row - Matchstick Men, Kingdom of Heaven and A Good Year. American Gangster wasn't all that, either IMO.

Kingdom of Heaven wasn't bad. I was thinking of The Counselor which got panned by critics. I thought it was quite outstanding, if difficult to watch in places. The sense of doom at the end is powerful.

The extended version of Kingdom of Heaven is worth seeing. Too much was cut for the cinema release IMO. I thought it a great film.

I watched Imperium at the weekend which has Daniel Radcliff as an undercover FBI agent who infultrates a Nazi racist group intent on mass death and destruction. Daniel plays the part extremely well, and the film is surprisingly moving, I still struggle to understand how anyone could hate the colour of someones skin so much they would want to wipe them off the face of the earth! Not a film you could watch over and over, but certainly worth viewing.

We had a family viewing of The Martian and all of us loved it ... When Ridley Scott is on form you are in for a treat - thought it was an absolutely superb film, one of the best I have seen in some time. Matt Damon perfectly cast. The landscapes look absolutely stunning on bluray too ... Can't imagine how good it would look in 4K ... The mrs isn't keen on the idea of a new TV though! Still haven't got around to buying this , one of the few films that has got to be better than the book , far too much unnecessary technical info.

We downloaded The Martian when it first came available on Sky but haven't yet got around to viewing it. Based on these reviews we must do that soon.

The Girl on the Train. Slow paced and takes about half the film to really get a grip on the storyline. Emily Blunt cast against her normal style (and not looking gorgeous) in a role as an alcoholic that must have been quite challenging to get right. Complex non-linear timeline causes some confusion, not to mention similar looking women and men. It does reward with a rather grippy second half leading to the unravelling of the mystery. You need patience for this one.

Room, a superb made for TV (I think) movie with a very sinister feel. about a 5 year old boy raised in the room he and his mum were kept after she was kidnapped at 17 years old. IMHO extremely well acted by both Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay who play the mother and son. It was on C4 last week, so if you have catch up, not the nicest of subjects, but well worth a watch. It had both my wife and I captivated throughout.

American Sniper.Remarkable film and story. As difficult as it is to watch, I found myself utterly gripped from start to finish. Outstanding performance by Bradley Cooper as Navy S.E.A.L. sniper Chris Kyle. I highly recommend you don't watch it late at night! I found myself being hyper-vigilant afterwards and it took me ages to get to sleep!!!

Agreed, that's a truly great film. Good supporting role by Sienna Miller as the wife, too.

Unlocked
Decent spy thriller, not a game changer and suffers from the usual tendency to become quite far fetched by the end. The compelling reason for seeing it is Noomi Rapace, who loses her tattoo (!) but is very watchable throughout. It also has good turns by Michael Douglas, John Malkovitch and Orlando Bloom. Some nice settings in London.

Bit odd I've never before got around to watching Once Upon A Time In The West considering the Clint Eastwood Spag Westerns are among my favourite films. Anyway I watched it on Blu-Ray last night , all 166 mins , wow what a film , never thought I'd say this but its better that G B & U , I think

Alien: Covenant
Ridley Scott again, at the peak of his form. Well-written story coming in after Prometheus and before Alien. Fantastic vistas, H R Giger imagery, superb attention to detail, unnerving, visceral violence. The whole thing gets the heart beating in places. Michael Fassbender is brilliant playing the parts of both David and Walter.
Ok, I'm a Scott fan and liked Alien and Prometheus, too. 9/10 for this one.

Watched The Revenant last night.
Worth seeing just for the bleak but beautiful cinematography. The bluray looks quite stunning on my 1080p TV - the ultraHD bluray must look mind-blowing on a new 4K TV. I would say in terms of picture quality, along with Avatar, the best I have seen ...
Very impressive performance from DiCaprio - obviously put himself through the mill to make this film.
