Lucy - Luc Besson (2014) Great film. Far better than the 2.5 star rating Tivo had Recommended Watched it last night , enjoyed it , wish it had been longer , the plot seemed to be rushed and needed greater depth .

Can't say I thought that much of Lucy. Watchable, but for me was nothing special.
Her was a much better and more thought provoking film.

Watched Hanna again last night. Really well made, arty, quirky, beautifully shot and with some ace musical backdrops by The Chemical Brothers.

Dunkirk.
I liked it for many reasons: there is little dialogue but a lot of very human behaviour depicted; there are heroics but also disgraceful moments; several storylines are depicted in parallel; it seems true to the known historical facts. The direction is fantastic, the dogfights are very realistically portrayed (it's amazing that anyone got shot down at all) and the sudden violence is quite shocking. Great performances all round. Oh, and the Hans Zimmer soundtrack is superb.
Great film.

I'm also expecting Dunkirk to become one of my favourite films of the year...
Wonderwoman Mmmm... Didn't live up to expectations - although it's always difficult to take your eyes from Gal Gadot! Going to watch Criminal now.
Ghost in the Shell Neither did that one - despite the bodysuits!
Cure for Wellness Exceptional gorgeous set piece photography that earns the 'Remarkable' description by itself. There are a couple of scenes / shots that I could imagine becoming quite well known prints. I also thought the whole thing was unusually well rounded in every respect, just quirky enough to be intriguing and original. Reminded me of The Shining for several reasons, although there's no similarity to the story.
LIFE This surprised me. Both thoughtful and escapist, it maintained a tension from beginning to end and was thoroughly satisfying. The opposite of the contrived Alien Covenant.

Guy Ritchie's King Arthur - Exceptional! I walked out after 45 minutes or so, David Beckham was the last straw. I really thought it was a dreadful film, sorry. Best for me at the movies right now (in no particular order) DetroitDunkirkWind River
This is exceptional, Nick Cave co-wrote the score, screenplay by Taylor Sheridan (Sicario & Hell or High Water). Don't miss this one if you liked Sicario and HOHW. I've seen it three times now and may go for a forth Tis' darned good and I love the music. Very disappointed by IT, not scary at all. It's not a bad film, but I expected much more from a Stephen King classic. Just not sinister enough and too many 'jump/shock' scare tactics, which don't make me jump. Very weak as a horror movie IMO, with quite a few stolen/reused ideas, which I won't share so as not to spoil. If you like King, still go see it though as YMMV

Perhaps not remarkable in and of itself but I finally got around to watching the Blu-ray of Star Trek - Beyond last night, in 3D, and it was a great watch. Yes, I know, 99% of you disparage 3D films but I have to say that the use of that format in this case was brilliant. It was not overdone, as in a lot of films, it did not need to repeatedly "prove" it was in 3D by having things fly out of the screen into your face, it simply enhanced the viewing experience. It sounds clichéd perhaps, but I did forget I was watching a 3D film because the effect was immersive rather than superficial. My personal opinion is that it's a shame that 3D is falling out of favour when it can be done this well.

Did anyone else bother to see Dunkirk in IMAX format?
I saw it in Manchester. Publicity claimed that around 70% was filmed in IMAX 70mm but to my eyes most of it was shot in a very grainy 'standard' 70mm ... The opening scenes up until the soldier heads down to the beach looked staggering in terms of resolution and realism but from a purely visual perspective it was downhill all the way from there. Of course it's possible the grain was intentional but then why make the opening look so pristine?
