Just seen Star Wars - The Force Awakens on blu-ray.
Enjoyed this as much as I did at the cinema. Much prefer it to Rogue One - director JJ Abrams allows the film to breathe more and for the story to unfold more naturally. Also has some very memorable photography which I found missing in Rogue One.

One of the things that for me made the JJ Abrams directed Star Wars so successful is that he made a point of doing much more work in camera, building big sets and using models, rather than relying solely on cgi. That what I hated about the later George Lucas films is that they were totally reliant on cgi, often shooting on green-screens and creating the sets in post-production.

Best thing Lucas did for me was 'THX1138'

The other issue with episodes 1 to 3 the script of a person journey to the dark side was just not believable

The script is what ruined it.
Abrams does little wrong ever since the excellent Alias series.

I know this is a remarkable film thread, but one of the most unremarkable films I have seen is the new Scorsese, 'Silence' . . . jeepers it's hard work and slow. It's also about 2 hours too long. You have been warned I wish I'd seen your post before I tried Tim! I finally managed it with extensive use of the fast forward button. Shame as Andrew Garfield is a most watchable actor. Still, he made up for it with Hacksaw Ridge - an absolute must see, up there with Rage and Saving Private Ryan.

Just watched Fury.
Absolutely gruelling, startlingly graphic but compelling tale of a single tank crew in last months of WW2. Brad Pitt and co are all superb. Very interesting special feature on all the hard-core training they had so they looked the part. Also good to hear from the tank veterans who gave the actors first-hand accounts of the realities of war up against a much better equipped opponent. There are only four of these guys left now.

Yes, I thought Fury was a fantastic film.

Patriots' Day The story of the Boston Marathon bombings. Ultra-realistic. Shocking, disturbing and compelling. Very well constructed. Just go and see it.

I didn't know whether to mention it here or not, but has anyone seen Birdman? Interesting...

Thoroughly enjoyed Interstellar the other night. Good film that. Just got around to watching that , excellent I tried not to think to hard about the science and just go with it . Best bit is when they return to the mothership after a day or so and their shipmate has been waiting over 23 years , mind blowing.

It is one of those you have to watch until the end really. I do come across films occasionally that I have no idea what's going on, but I always stick it out just in case there's something at the end that explains all or makes it worthwhile. Did that with a French film last month called Oblivion, but was left with that "WTF" feeling.

We had a family viewing of The Martian and all of us loved it ...
When Ridley Scott is on form you are in for a treat - thought it was an absolutely superb film, one of the best I have seen in some time.
Matt Damon perfectly cast. The landscapes look absolutely stunning on bluray too ... Can't imagine how good it would look in 4K ... The mrs isn't keen on the idea of a new TV though!
