November the 1st has been a special day for me for a few years now. It's the start of the '30 Days of Dead'.Each day in November the Grateful Dead website has a new 320Kbps MP3 download of an unreleased live Grateful Dead track, chosen by Dead archivist and producer David Lemieux. Since they played over 2,300 gigs and recorded almost every single one and they were well known for the huge variety of material that they played and jammed on (over 500 different songs) there's a lot of stuff to choose from! Since their live work mainly consists of long jams, (which is, of course, a horror to some people!), this means that by the end of the month, you have 6 full CDs worth of music, which, as it's free, represents rather astonishing value for money! I usually wait until the end of the month and download the lot in one go and then make a weekend of it!

The first track is 29 minutes of Scarlet Begonias / Touch Of Gray / Fire On The Mountain

I'm afraid I put The Dead into my Frank Zappa category of music I haven't yet learned to access. I first heard them when a school mate played me Blues for Allah and have never had my mind changed since.

Sadly, that seems to be the case for so many people.

I keep trying Chris and each year when you poke us, I try again. One day it's going to click I'm sure, so keep poking old bean I'm with you on Zappa too Martin, I don't know how many times I've tried him over the years, but it never works.

For you John, I think I would probably recommend one of the live albums. Perhaps Live/Dead might be a good one? It shows their ability to be almost telepathic in their improvisation. It's got one of the best versions of 'Dark Star', which most fans hold in rather high regard.

Great! For Tim, I'd recommend 'American Beauty'

I have Hundred Year Hall Chris and I do quite like Terrapin Station (from you I think on AoS?), but don't know American Beauty, so I'll give it a try if it's on Spotify or elsewhere.

Same as the others on this one I'm afraid.... just don't get it.... endless rambling jams that go nowhere and have little tune, hooks, riffs is what I hear.... I like the more accessible Zappa though!

Yes think I am one of them. Tend to think the same as Jez and I generally enjoy improvised music
