Customers as beta testers That's the point, Mike. We couldn't do that in a retail environment. Everything had to be squared away by the time the stores opened on the first day of trading with the new system. Not only did we have to know that we'd done everything humanly possible to ensure that the software and hardware were working perfectly but also that the shop-floor staff throughout the branches were not only trained but confident about their training. I was answerable to my boss, she was answerable to the company's financial director, and that's' a very short chain of command if things go wrong, especially when you're at the wrong end of the chain. I should probably add that there were no hitches whatsoever, other than the odd member of the staff having to resort to my manual occasionally, but system-wise the change was as seamless as we could have hoped.

I always tried to do much the same in my environment. Lost the will against the onslaught of mediocrity
