Copland - Fanfare for the Common Man
Just back from a break, it had to go on first. I know of no other recording with the impact of this one. On Qobuz in 24/44.

Yuja Wang in Brahms PC2. Very good indeed. Nicely played and properly percussive, which really helps with a composer like Brahms who can sound a bit murky with his heavy compositions. Very enjoyable. Listening to her PC1 too, I'm beginning to really like young Miss Wang.

Well, Ms Wang does lack the coquettish smiles and cutesy mannerisms of a certain other pianist, but she can tickle my ivories any time she wants. Lets see how she tackles Beethoven's monumental solo masterpiece, the op 106 'Hammerklavier' sonata .... Absolutely brilliant Beethoven playing imho. None of the self conscious and self indulgent mannerisms displayed by KatiaB in the Schubert D960 piano sonata. I'm sure the passing of the years will deepen YW's art even further. I'd love to hear her in the opp. 109-111 sonatas. And some late Schubert sonatas, too. I wonder if she'll be allowed the time to record a complete Beethoven sonata cycle - I certainly hope so but I fear that her superstar status will get in the way of that sort of thing. I shall be following her career with considerable interest.

An excellent performance of Beethoven's Kreutzer violin sonata with Joshua Bell and Yuja Wang. The piano is an unusually equal partner here, usually the violin dominates. Very effective. She's a great chamber music player, too.
