You have to love Bernard Haitink, especially with Bruckner. In action rehearsing Bruckner 7 for tomorrow night with Berlin Phil and sounding superb.

He has that presence that only a few conductors have. I last felt that way about seeing Jochum conducting.

I have freely admitted to having very little knowledge of Mahler, as never really engaged with his music.
Here is a quite outstanding new live recording of Symphony 1 from the superb Les Siecles.
Played with a compelling zest and nuance, I love the performance; it’s infectious!
For me it just oozes with Austro Bohemian atmosphere and there are some just sublime moments of inspiration to enjoy.
A great discovery for me.

Grandes Orgues Ruffatti de la Cathedrale d'Uppsala
Another fantastic sounding Ruffatti, floor shaking stuff.

I wish I could find more Virgil Fox on streaming. He has recorded with the huge Ruffatti at Garden Grove and I have the direct cut vinyl and CD transfer. I actually quite like his style and find that of many others, like Ton Koopman and Simon Preston, a bit mannered.

There's smething about the rather weird soundworld of Gloria Coates that compels me to listen. Chamber music, symphonies, all of a similar (weird) style. I think that MartinT would be impressed by the sheer scale of the music (and the excellent sq) on this album even while I'm not sure what he'd make of the music! - try track 5 and see what you think, Martin.

Mmmm, a bit of Wagner, a touch of Walton Vaughan Williams and a dash of McCabe so far...

Goodness me, what does the sheet music look like for track 6?!
Compelling and disturbing at the same time. I shall investigate and listen to more tomorrow. Thanks, Jerry!

OK, Symphony No 7 sounds amazing. Gloria Coates is now definitely on my radar.
I'll be listening to more of her music.
