Weinberg - Symphony Nos. 2 & 21
Got this through from Presto: Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla conducts symphonies by Mieczysław Weinberg. And if you can pronounce those names you're doing well.

Strauss - Four Last Songs, Norman
The most remarkable Four Last Songs I know. Was there ever a more sympathetic accompaniment to Im Abendrot than Masur and the Gewandhausorchester? Beyond sublime.

Thanks - I have it on vinyl and now spoti ... Was always my favourite. Sometime I will have a listen to more recent recordings to see if any of them get close ...

We've just been talking about Jessye Norman. Try her Cleopatra, just fabulous, especially the final death scene.

I found this film of Barenboim playing Mozart's Alla Turca for my son as he has just started to learn it. Love this performance - his left hand pounds out the rhythm with metronomic accuracy, whilst the right hand deftly carves out some wonderfully crisp yet delicate melodies. This, on the other hand is complete and utter bilge! Classic Lang Lang encore, gilding the lily to monumental proportions, an exercise in excess. All he shows is speed, just none of the phrasing and precision of Barenboim. As for those facial expressions … Come back Liberace, all is forgiven.

He does rather believe his own reputation.
Not my favourite pianist.
