There's something about the rather weird soundworld of Gloria Coates that compels me to listen. Chamber music, symphonies, all of a similar (weird) style. I made it as far as track 6, Jerry, but then it started to get a tad too odd for me.

This is quite a chamber music discovery. Really enjoying this on repeat play! Even has solo violin for Jules and solo cello for Paul!

This is quite a chamber music discovery. Really enjoying this on repeat play! Even has solo violin for Jules and solo cello for Paul! I gave it a go, Jerry. If I were marking it I'd probably give it a 6/ 10. I thought a lot of it was quite derivative. I spotted Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saens, Massenet, Bach, Britten, and Scott Bradley at different times throughout the album. Some of the piano sounded a bit like Les Dawson plays Satie. OK, that was an exaggeration, but some of it sounded like it couldn't make its mind up whether it wanted to be chamber music or mildly avant-garde jazz. On track one, I believe it was, I even thought that the violinist captured a bit of Stéphane Grappelli's tone. All in all, a bit of a mixed bag. I liked what I liked but found it quite easy to ignore what I didn't.

I just adore Ravel.
So much colour, highly impressionistic ...

Am a big fan of period instrument outfit Les Siecles. They don't know how to make a dull recording.
Now listening to them weave their magic on The Firebird.

Glad you found something! They do a superb performance of La Mer, but if that's too 'French' for you, do check out their riveting Mahler 1 I discovered last week.

Ah, well, Mahler 1st. Not a proper Mahler symphony, really. Haven't listened to it in years, decades probably! My favourite used to be Andrew Litton. I used to be fond of the work but I've kind of moved on. I might well give both his and Les Siecles a listen and see how far I get.
Any French horn fanciers here? This is nice.

This is unusual and also enjoyable. The 1st piece on the album is for brass quartet and orchestra. It works surprisingly well!

I used to play the French Horn as a kid but haven't listened to it as a solo instrument since!! I still have the remnants of calluses on my hands from carrying it around - just hated that ... I'm new to Mahler 1 but absolutely love the Les Siecles recording.

Much was made of Rachmaninov's huge hand span which is quite useful for the piano of course.
My son compared his hand span with mine on the piano earlier today and he can already play an extra note at age 14!

Mahler should be standing between Beethoven (no wonder he wore a big hat) and Mozart. Leonard Bernstein slots in between Chopin and Dvořák.

Kalliwoda - quite impressive is a light kind of way. I especially like the clarinet piece.
