As i've now sold a few items and have some readies, i'm looking for a replacement TT. I've got £350-400 towards one, not really fussed if its DD / BD, but definitley want it to be vintage looking.
Any ideas gratefully received.
Thanks

How vintage? An old Rega would be worth looking at if you want simple and reliable.

Yes, thought about one of them, but think prefer a 70's or early 80's,. I like the look of the large platter styles a la 401's but cheaper!!!

Maybe a Systemdek, AR, Thorens or similar suspended belt drive, then. Most are fetching good prices these days, though.

If you into a bit of DIY how about a Lenco as needs a decent plinth Not sure how much the Pioneer PL 71 goes but certainly fits the rest of your criteria

I have been considering a Lenco, or possibly a Thorens, so much to learn!
Had a look around for a Pioneer as mentioned but nothing doing, rarer than hens teeth

The PL71 is a lovely deck if you can get a good one, but few were sold here in the UK and it was gone and forgotten all too quickly at the time. If you treat (site) them as a Rega, a vintage pre-quartz Technics can sound excellent, but you play them with lid off and as with a Rega, site carefully. The SL1500's I had (and I may have the first one back if I can prise it from its current keeper) needed the (four) speed pots and switch cleaning and the techie arm needed fresh exit wires as they were knackered. The original headshell 'sounds' spongy with more demanding cartridges and the current light and rigid one with posher looking wires fitted is fine for many cartridges and to finish off, a 3mm cork mat on top of the stock thick rubber one worked well for me. I used a Supex 900E in my second one (ADC headshell complete with rubbery washer in situ!) once I'd learned how to use it, and the 'sound' was delightful. Tell you summat, the silent backgrounds at the lower frequency end in comparison with noisy idler drives (including ALL Lencos) is a joy on a wide-range speaker or headphones... Thorens and AR decks are expensive now and not really worth the effort unless you really know how to set one up - yes I know it's common sense, but I've seen so many that aren't working properly and to be honest, you don't always get a Rega-standard musical sound from a Thorens 160 unless it's a 'Super' model with better plinth, base and mat...

I liked my PL-71 - comes with a very good arm, so no faffing around there - just fit the best cart you can ...
I was impressed by Alan's Lenco at the ASBO - very different looks of course, so if you like the style certainly one to investigate.

Will you be needing a deck with all the bits to, or do you have an arm, cartridge and phono stage already? Either way, I'd be going for the Lenco option, myself. For belt drive, an AR EB101 or a Legend if you can find one. Make sure it's genuinely a Legend though, and not a mis-described The Turntable.

Ive had a couple of REGA's and liked them, but your right they need isolating and unfortunately i don't have that luxury for this one at the moment. ( Its an office set up being placed on top of a very large and heavy sideboard). eventually when further funds ( XMAS / Birthday ) are made available i will invest in some dedicated hifi racking and possibly a wall mounted TT shelf. So for the moment i reckon a suspended chassis model will fit the bill more readily.

Id expect it to go for alot less than 350 quid due to the plinth being twatted at the rear corner, but the plinth damage won't make any difference.
Those plinths are simple and its easy enough to make a new one if it was that big a deal.
The motor unit is self contained so a nice easy job.
Jvc's overall tend to be rather underrated. My ql-y5f is used every day

6750s and the even better 8750's ceased being sleepers years ago now and prices are pretty high these days I reckon (I remember the 6750 being 'ok' at the time but the 8750 was *the* one from that range of integrated decks (I don't think we ever saw the TTS8000 here) and we couldn't sell it despite it beating a period LP12... ALL of the less massy models will need careful siting if a mid bass thickening is to be avoided. The really heavy ones seem to get round this and obviously we have better cartridges today.
Be careful with far eastern kit in general, All of it was designed to be a mugs eyeful first and foremost as this is what you see (I've seen the tat underneath one or two terrible sounding low to mid price Luxman decks for example that looked gorgeous on top...). The fact some of the better ones reproduced the music so well was almost an afterthought back then I believe...

Ive used hundreds of different turntables over 35+ years.. Ended up just using a early Rega in the end. Popped a new £60 motor in it should last for years.. No end of bits & bobs you can swap out & change if you want to.. Life is to short
