Mumsnet is on the money!
This describes my feelings on the matter very succinctly.
The nightmarish lachrymosity of Fairytale is discussed with passion at Mumsnet. “Hate it. Crappy cliches about drunken Irish people in prison singing songs from the auld country and gambling. Crappy video, crappy singing, crappy message"

As I've said, it's all about the poetry of the lyrics for me. The video that accompanies the Pogues/Kirsty version also helped "sell" the song to the public as it's (in my opinion, obviously) excellent. The song was written by Shane, together with Jem Finer. Read the lyrics and imagine the story. I'll shut up now. p.s. I'm a huge Kirsty MacColl fan, but not a rabid Pogues fan. p.p.s. I'm even a fan of the author whose novel that the title was pinched from.

Read the lyrics and imagine the story. NO because it's a **** song, it'll always be a **** song and I have better things to do with my life.
Ooo, that feels good

This was playing as I walked into Tesco during the week, so I walked straight out again.

I thought I was doing so well too Jules, with no TV and listening to mainly Radio 4 on the wireless I thought I would breeze through unscathed. Who'd have thought it would be Tesco to bring me down! Wireless, check me out

Another Xmas song I just can't abide is Flying Pickets - Only You. Thankfully it doesn't seem to be played much now.
