I had my first blast of this effing song yesterday, in the corridor.
It has not grown on me.

I would happily erase every last recording of it and dump the master tapes in the mincer. There, that would improve the world no end

Indifferent. I can certainly see why people like it, and why people dislike it. It's not at all my cup of tea, but I don't find it offensive.

More interesting is the attempts in some circles to censor the word ‘faggot’ from the lyrics. I give up on the country sometimes!

As far as I'm concerned, it's still a great piece of songwriting and a great performance. I was reminded, though, thanks to the resurrection of this thread, of another version I have. It was actually this fella's version I heard first, and for a long while, I thought he'd written it. It might be more to your taste, Martin, or it might not, but I'm glad of the excuse to play it. The brilliant Christy Moore, who really knows how to introduce a song, and how to end it...

A year too late?
Only have The Best of the Pogues. Listen occasionally.
Like Fairytale. But then I don't go to malls, or listen to the radio. So only hear it when I want to...

Clearly this song is a bit like Marmite... hehe!
Still the best Christmas song of all time in my opinion.

It's a folk song. The lyrics are designed to tell a story. The arrangement (as Christie Moore shows) is not crucial. It's a drunken hymn, it's an homage to Irish immigrants lost in New York, it's poetry. Try Googling the lyrics and read them without referencing the tune. Maybe it helps that I used to play a lot of Irish folk music, I don't know, but as modern folk songs go I'd put it up there with Elvis Costello's "Shipbuilding," which Robert Wyatt makes his own.
I know I'm not going to change any minds, but at least I'm verbalising why I like it. I don't think anyone has yet said WHY they think it's a piece of crap, just that it is.

I don't think anyone has yet said WHY they think it's a piece of crap, just that it is. OK then, despite being half Irish I really don't like anything remotely like Irish folk music, having had it forced on me as a yoof. I don't like Punk. I don't particularly like Shane MacGowan (probably a bit harsh as I've never met him, but he wrote this song!) and whilst I don't like to say any music is crap, this makes me cringe. The real kicker is I absolutely loathe Christmas and anything to do with Christmas, so this is the perfect storm and it's probably the only song on earth that actually makes me angry when I hear it and every bloody year, there it is again. If this song didn't exist I actually might like Christmas.
It epitomises everything I dislike about plastic regurgitated popular music and the idiots who keep it alive.
Will that do for starters?

Absolutely. I'm just interested to find out what provokes such a strong reaction in so many people.

It's blippy boppy duet pantomime. Whether he is actually pissed or just singing that way, I have a massive aversion to drunks.
And, as Tim says, the commercial aspect of Christmas 'enjoyment' is rammed down our throats in extreme.

Have you ever heard any of their other music?, it all sounds similar in presentation. <iframe width="34.180000000000064" height="3.5600000000000023" style="position: absolute; width: 34.180000000000064px; height: 3.5600000000000023px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 15px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_21918957" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="34.180000000000064" height="3.5600000000000023" style="position: absolute; width: 34.18px; height: 3.56px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 1638px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_13881341" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="34.180000000000064" height="3.5600000000000023" style="position: absolute; width: 34.18px; height: 3.56px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 15px; top: 118px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_4855467" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="34.180000000000064" height="3.5600000000000023" style="position: absolute; width: 34.18px; height: 3.56px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 1638px; top: 118px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_6218625" scrolling="no"></iframe>
