If the interface is HDMI and it can handshake with a 1 bit compatible device then it will do it. The SPDIF isn't a recognised interface for 1 bit.

I know, but the settings are still odd.

Esoteric/Teac used HDMI, one per channel (two), to hook their DSD capable transports up to their DSD capable DAC. dCS use firewire, one per channel (two), to hook their their DSD capable transports up to their DSD capable DAC. Pioneer use HDMI, a single one, (both channels), to hook their their DSD capable transports up to their DSD capable Receivers.
All use their own proprietary connections protocols, despite using commonly recognised and available connectors/cables, so Esoteric plays with Esoteric and so on. They're all closed systems, and part of that is that none of the companies are permitted to include digital interfacing to external capture devices, because the SACD licensing forbids it.
Another thing to consider is this. Does the common or garden SPDIF have the switching speed to support single bit at 2.8224 MHZ?

OK, so technically it could be done. It isn't, and that has to be down to licensing and copyright issues.

Anyone used one for playing CD/SACDs? Yep...used one for 2 years...nice quality build...plays sacd well...never had any issue with the draw....not the fastest when reading the disc...found it better as a transport than a stand alone...only bought it for music playback...the remote is quality too...a bit dated, but still a capable player....If you can pick one up for £40.00-£50.00...
