Anyone used one for playing CD/SACDs?

No, but I do use a DVD3910.

I also have a 3910 and have played both SACD and DVD Audio and it isn't half bad.

I got my DVD3910 cheap (£10 ) because it was supposed not to play DVDs. It will not play DVD audio discs, but it will play normal CDs and both layers of the few SACDs I have.
To my mind it makes a good transport, but not sure if I would pay for a good one. The onboard DAC is pretty good if you don't gave a separate one.
Mine might need a new laser, and they are quite cheap on Ebay if you are happy to fit yourself.
When my Cambridge CXC transport arrives on Friday I will see how that sounds in comparison.

Dodgy draw seems to be a bit of an issue with it. Couple on eBay for about £60 and was curious about one for the odd SACD I have.

Some inexpensive Pioneer Blu-ray players can play SACDs and make a half-decent transport for all discs.

My mate brought an Onkyo C-S5VL round for me to try my one and only SACD (a Linn sampler). As a CD player it was better than most. Comparing CD and SACD, I found the latter to be a bit too laid back for me, although my mate said this was a trait of the actual disc I had. My point is that the player was prety good on CD so I'd expect it and other Onkyos to be decent on SACD and they go for very little these days. Maybe worth a look?

An add on DAC is fine for improving CD playback but of no use for SACD and DVDA. The internal Dacs of the 2900 are pretty good for hi-res discs.

If your player can push out 1-bit (my Pioneer Blu-ray player does), then the Beresford Caiman-II and Caiman SEG can decode it. I tried it and to my amazement it worked.

On the DVD3910 the proper SACD audio output is only through the output pair of RCA phono sockets. The CD layer of a SACD disc may well play through the digital out and an offboard DAC.
I have seen HDMI leads that seem to be able to tap off the SACD audio signal, but not sure how that would work.

Via co-ax and Toslink S/PDIF.

Via co-ax and Toslink S/PDIF. Cheers - then that is something they don't want people to know. In that case any DAC or DAC/Streamer that claims to do DSD conversion from files should decode SACD from a transport?

Yes, I guess so. There is precious little info about the 1-bit mode and I wonder how Pioneer get around the licencing restrictions of a raw digital DSD feed.

In all probability your Pioneer Bluray does not output 1 bit DSD over the SPDIF. The Beresford DAC has no indications as to what it's processing, which doesn't help in clarifying the situation.
Pioneer had to develop proprietary handling protocols to transfer DSD from their players/transports to their AV Receivers, and their protocols are not interchangable with A N Other manufacturer's protocols. Pioneer chose to do it over HDMI, so that's where your 1 bit DSD is going to reside. If your Bluray can handle DVD-A discs, then it's likely to output 24/96 via the SPDIF, and any 24/192 material will be downsampled to 24/96.

I thought that it must be offering some hi-res transcode myself, however reference to the manual says that Bitstream is available as an option in the digital audio output (not HDMI), as well as PCM and DTS.
The Caiman gives no indication of what it's receiving, as you say. I would love to know what's going on there.
Player is a Pioneer BDP-LX55.

I reckon that the player is doing a high res transcode, because it isn't handshaking with a DSD capable device over the HDMI.

Then why make it an option for the digital audio interface?
