My cdp has been out of action for over a year now. So I decided to buy something else this week whilst I get the other one fixed and it's arriving tomorrow ...
Tonight I took the hood off one last time to clean the laser and check connections from transport to main circuit board. Started off dead, not spinning and reading a CD. After 30 mins or so of messing around I got a sense that one of the five connectors wasn't quite sitting right so took it out again and reseated it...
Feck me I have now listened to 40 mins or so of digital music without any skipping or blips.
So tomorrow I will hook up the new player and do a little shoot-out - one will be getting sold!

I'm surprised that you still entertain CDPs. I gave up on them many moons ago, once I'd realised that streaming was a much more efficient method of accessing a digital audio library. My CDs have all been ripped to WAV and losslessly compressed to FLAC for a good time past, and I no longer have a CDP connected up (I have one in a cupboard upstairs, and I don't know if it still runs without some attention). I still buy CDs, because it's still rare that you can purchase lossless files, but I rip them to my server for local streaming to my Squeezebox Touch players.
If I were you I'd be reading the RasPi threads and not considering replacing a CDP with another CDP. I'd be looking to transcode to another more flexible and easily accessible method of delivery, one that doesn't result in sideways looking and reading and cricked necks.

Thing is, I *like* having a CD collection and they sound right up there with vinyl whereas my streaming is not quite at the same level.

Hmm.
Although I'm actively going the digital way with a DIY Vortexbox, I still like sorting through all my CDs and using a CD (or DVD) player.
Should be picking up a barebones PC (less hard drive) in Pudsey (home of the bear ) as I'm up in Bradford over Easter.
Another collect only Ebay bargain.

I'd consider Bug head when the interface became less for masochists

Have you considered using Bug-head? No, it's not for me. The problem with file 'ownership' is that it's soulless. Part of my joy every evening is browsing physically though what I've got, part-remembered songs on an obscure compilation, albums I've forgotten I have etc. I also like having the damned things in a collection. Even if Bug-head were up there in SQ with my Ayre SACD player (which it isn't), I prefer what I've got.

I actually bought a RasPi and DAC but just never got round to setting it up and ending up selling it ... I guess I'm a bit like Martin, and like to be able to get my hands on the music as it were. I was a bit reluctant to switch on the player this morning in case it went haywire again but powered up fine and read the disc very quickly indeed. Because it's Easter, Parcelfarce won't be delivering my other cdp till Tuesday, so the 24 courier has turned into a 5 day courier! The irony is it's a collection depot 10 minutes away but they won't let me collect it until one delivery attempt has been made.

I give up. Played 10 minutes of a cd this morning then it suddenly stopped. Now it won't even read a disc.

You're unlucky Jules
I've had a 2 or maybe 3 fail over the years. One still works most of the time

The problem with file 'ownership' is that it's soulless. I have FLAC files which my Blu-Ray Player plays and displays all the info inc. art work but I agree they are soulless , I'm enjoying buying some of the very nice re-packaged/mastered discs. *sorry made a mess of that quote*

How can good music be soulless? The music is the music , not the wrapping. I don't need (or want) the plastic to enjoy the music

Maybe one day
Currently, for me the CDp tech is better than the files on computer. I think that will change. Not sure when though

I got it completely, the medium for me is immaterial, there is only the music, so to say a music file is souless makes no sense to me, as thats the music - the rest is just window dressing

One good thing that has come out of this fiasco is that it has reminded me just how wonderful my turntable playback is.
The cdp performance isn't 50% of its quality IMO. The only thing that cdp does better is silent backgrounds, and that's it.
Now if I had Mike's Isis cdp I'm sure that might change, but I don't!

There is an aspect to the enjoyment of collecting which is quite apart from the enjoyment of the music. A collection is a thing of beauty which you choose to ignore. That's fine, but you should at least recognise it!

Julesd68 - can I suggest adding a Bluetooth receiver into your system. Streaming from idevices/Tidal hifi to your system may "fill the gap" you are missing. Cheap as well at about £6 and easy to set up. I find the sq very good as well.

Flip it the other way Martin, you are not getting my viewpoint? The notion that material object's can have ' a soul' and one more than another is just bonkers to me - nutter's, likeable nutter's, but nutter's nonetheless.
