Yep, we just can't see each other's viewpoints. Fun, though

One good thing that has come out of this fiasco is that it has reminded me just how wonderful my turntable playback is. The cdp performance isn't 50% of its quality IMO. The only thing that cdp does better is silent backgrounds, and that's it. Now if I had Mike's Isis cdp I'm sure that might change, but I don't! In the not too distant future I'll compare the Isis with the Pioneer stable platter* and Caiman. I think it could be close. Not too close please as my world would be shaken *various to be found from as little as £40 up

Not too close please as my world would be shaken I have a Pioneer platter PD703 you've reminded me to try again Mike. It had a nice upgrade to the output section too. My PS3 is always a surprise, music flows out of it in a quite non-digital way, but not the most detailed thing admittedly. Is that the processing or the plastic case? I changed to lossless files when yet another CDP turned flaky and started to think it was in charge of when music should or should not be played. The players were only good mass market, made to a price affairs though. I am getting a little frustrated with file replay for various reasons and a return to CD and a better player may be imminent. I'll have to hear your Isis sometime but I'm looking for an Ayre where they have the price mistyped and a nought missing. I've heard many CDP that were hailed as 'analogue sounding' yet remained disappointed, but Martin's machine walks the walk. Tried to listen to some vinyl at a friend's recently. A very respectable deck and good condition black plastic, but the crackles and pops were too distracting. And what a faff! "Oh, you want track 3 - hold on, that's on the other disc..." They say once you've heard black you can't go back - but I couldn't.

Crackles and pops are distracting and that is why I am fussy about vinyl quality and cleaning. Obviously that vinyl was not in such great shape. It's all worth it and can assure you buying an expensive CD player does not protect the transport from going tits up. Repair and parts can be a problem on anything more than a few years old. I'm sure there are machines that rival the Ayre for a lot less especially if you only need red book CD playback.
