Coming to the realization of what individuals are really like, might be one reason. There is a saying: You can judge a person by the company he keeps.
I'm curious as to why people join a forum and never post.
Even more curious, is what is it in the British male psyche that has individuals needing to be as abusive as they are? No surprise there's no real female presence to speak of. Is the British female equally as abusive on forums? " Call yourself a f-----g jam maker and you don't use pectin? What kind of a f-----g moron are you?" I cannot be doing with abuse and snapshot judgements. I would imagine some leave forums when tired of such abuse.

Paul (classicrock), your comments have overstepped the mark, I feel. No more please.

If you want examples of the lowest form of internet posts imaginable, just look at most YouTube comments. Quite what drives people to make themselves look such ignorant fools is beyond me, but they come in droves. You can't therefore expect to eradicate them from hi-fi forums.
As to the lack of female members, it's a shame and something we would like to correct, if that's possible.

Apologies Chris but the individual concerned oversteps the mark consistently and the politeness and no names approach does not address the situation that Jazzbones found himself in on that forum. Many have issues with these antics and they deserve a right royal p*** take.

We're leaving all comments standing as a public service, and names have not been mentioned. However, this forum does not exist to attack other forums, so please keep it strictly factual and without naming names. Thanks.

I have never left a forum but some are so unrewarding and controlled by the top level that they are just lacking in something. So one does not bother with them
Freedom of expression?

Im done with Audio Forums. The last one was the last straw. However a long time poster learns in the long run that there is really no friends on Forums imho..Very rare anyway. This one is ok but it's so slow i loose the will to live sometimes

I don't see how it can be done, short of surgical operations on existing members, or making TAS a sub-forum of Mumsnet. In the many years I've been posting on audio forums, female members have only ever been a tiny minority on any of them.

Andre, can the last one be 'the last straw' if you are writing the above on this one - the last but one straw - the penultimate straw?

As for women on hi-fi forums I can think of three (one of which doesn't post any more) - woman just aren't interested in hi-fi forums (can't blame them). It's not that they don't appreciate music or enjoy it reproduced well, it's just that they don't want to chat about endless audio trivia on the Internet (they don't know what they are missing ).

I've made quite a few good friends on hifi forums. And quite a few more valued acquaintances. Always nice to meet up at hifi shows, or have them round for a chat or go visit with them and play some tunes. Some really nice, genuine folk here and on other forums. Some complete b*stards as well, but that's life, I guess.

In my experience there are several different varieties of forum members. Broadly speaking they fall into the following categories:
!) Forum tarts who join each and every forum just because they can. They are usually to be found at the heart of many circular discussions because they never tire of re-inventing the wheel
2) DIY types who have useful information to impart and who rarely if ever get involved in forum 'politics'
3) Music fans who also tend to avoid the political side of things
4) People who get banned from many/most forums, so have to start their own. These, ironically but unsurprisingly, are usually the worst at coping with dissent
5) N00bs who join forums to ask 'simple' questions like 'what's the best amplifier?' and who are trampled into the dust by hordes of agenda-driven members who are looking to sell an amplifier, which is so good they can hardly bear to part with it. The N00bs tend to drift away quite quickly
6) Serial killers

Many Forums do not allow you to leave as such - you're stuck forever.
I've been tempted many times to 'leave' a couple of forums which seem to specialise in turning everything into a slanging match or where a simple question is replied to with a request for your whole life history.
I have ceased to participate in a (non hifi) forum which was totally dominated by a small number of individuals, and every reply I posted resulted in them querying my ability or my judgement.

I joined this place while i was on the other. When i say 'Last Straw' i meant not taking people i thought quite a bit about as friends. They seem to be ok till they disagree with you then the true colours show. However im done with Audio as a hobby. I just listern to what i have & do what i think is ok to my ears. I just hang about on TAS, when i have a spare half hour, it will not be a ritual as before.Playing the music sections is mainly where you will find me if you notice..

I agree with Jerry and have made some good friends and acquaintances through forums. Forums are just a discussion tool, real people are at the other end of the posts, with the same cross-section of types as you'll find anywhere else.

So why does supposid friendliness suddenly evaporate within one post of disagreement? i personally don't want to know people like that

So why does supposid friendliness suddenly evaporate within one post of disagreement? i personally don't want to know people like that I think a lot comes down to there being nowt so queer as folk. Everyone is entitled to disagree with what I post - just don't get all high and mighty about it. If I don't agree with what another member has posted and I say so publicly then the issue is, I feel, not one of disagreement, but one of being diplomatic about it. If I criticise something that someone has posted then I try to be constructive if it's possible. If it isn't possible to be constructive then it might be better to keep a diplomatic silence - Ive had a recent incident on another forum where this has been the case and I should have kept quiet.

Well said, Chris. We all have disagreements on occasion, it's how we deal with them that counts.

Closest I come is wanting to murder a bowl of cereal now and again i think I'm more of a collector/box swapper who enjoys forums as another way to see and hear more about their obsession.
