A nice Studer that one, I now have 2 Pr99s and I'm picking up a valve G36 at the audio jumble next month. Going to be doing some old school blues recordings

Love to have a deck like that. The Tandberg is sounding pretty good, but I bet that is on another level.

Yes, it'll go at 30ips - that's several other levels, I reckon!

When I have some spare time and not knackered it will be good to test a B against a G. SS v's Valves !

Aye, seen a few valve Revox come up on the bay, love to hear how they compare. They'd have to be very good to beat this Tandberg though, I'm shocked by how capable this thing is..

The G's I've heard have always sounded lovely in isolation, but when compared to other machines, a bit of a vintage valve cliche really.

I don't agree Chris, if set up properly a la Tim de Pavaracni they sound detailed, incisive and yet lush. The plan is to record the bands on the PR99s then make production/copy masters on the G36. The whole recording chain is either FET or valve mics and an A&H analogue desk from 1982. Just trying to get a set of Neve compressors and a good analog reverb. Hope to record the first band in April

I'm only recounting the experiences of the ones I have heard playing in various systems, Paul. I strongly doubt any of them had received the benefit of a Tim de P. service and recalibration. If that does the stuff for them, then great!

When I've played the SS and valves before the valves had a warmer sound.
With the vast amount of changes since then it will be interesting to compare

That A820 is a silly price!! Nice though. I have a PR99MkIII, a B62, Ferrograph Series 7, some sort of multitrack tascam or fostex (can't remember). A good recording on a reel to reel is still the best it gets IMHO!

Surprised me how good my recording of Underworld's session for John Peel is, recorded live from the radio.
Half track 7.5" on the B
Assumed it would sound a lot less good
Reminds me...... If I have time, and remember and don't fall asleep in the chair too much tomorrow it's time to play it again !

Picked up the G36 today, needs a service and a couple of caps are a bit sus, but for £50 it can't be bad. Also getting 2 A77s shortly a 1/4 track and a 1/2 track HS.
