I have always changed my oil every 3k or so, maybe up to 5k on occasion. I used to run a 2L Alfa 166 in which I did 220k in four years, with no problems whatsoever. Tolerances notwithstanding, I'm still of the opinion the extended servicing intervals are mostly a marketing strategy. www.testingautos.com/how-often-change-oilNot saying the car won't be fine following the manufacturer's recommendations, but if you tend to keep cars and run them into the ground (as I do) you will tend to get more mileage out of an engine that has had shorter service intervals.

There's a reason the oil specified for BMWs is Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel. It's very good fully synthetic oil (and expensive) and it easily copes with a year's driving.

That's a good oil, put the same in the Jag.

I was never a fan of diesel until I started driving them about 10 years ago, not looked back since and even converted my wife, Have had 2 Skoda Octavias as Family Cars and several small french cars which go forever, Skodas are excellent car any of the VW Diesels will go on and on, servicing varies but the more modern engines are variable service depending on driving generally between 10 and 20k.

Difficult to give them up.
Being a cheapskate 2nd hand buyer I can still get hold of nice motors

I have always purchases used care, I should not say this as I work in Auto Industry but new cars are such bad from a value for money perspective, Im lucky not as I can lease really nice cars but family car will most likely be used car in future still.

German car enthusiasts here - have had a collection of BMWs, Audis and VWs. Biggish cars ? Well my shortlist would be a BMW 5 series (for driving pleasure) and a VW Passat (get one with 4 wheel drive). The VWs are a lot of car for the money. We had a couple of 2.8 Syncros that did well over 200,000 miles with few problems and averaged close to 30mpg. Nicer to drive (but a little more dated looking inside) was a BMW 530sport (E39 chassis - best looking Beemer by far). great all rounder (but rear wheel drive is great when its dry, pants in the snow).

My faves used to be the BMW E39 series. I've had a 540i followed by a 530d, both excellent in their own way.
Of their current range, the 435d would be the one for sheer driving pleasure. Looks gorgeous, too.

Sally. Her Christmas present. She has lost confidence in hers and needs an auto for her dodgy leg As it's bright red I might get her a Fire Marshall's hat and/or badge

I've never had the pleasure, would love to try an XF Diesel S. Mind you, I'm very happy with my 335d Coupe, predecessor to the 435d, and it certainly isn't a slouch
