The differences make sense to me now, putting 2 and 2 together and maybe getting 4
Going back a few thousand years Males go out and hunt so have the skills they need for that Hearing needs to be very good to ensure the male doesn't become another animal's meal
Females stay home raise children into adulthood who keep the species going They need other skills to do that

Thanks, Tim, I'll hunt for it.
it's no wonder women avoid such things as Hi-Fi, with some of the comments made on forums! I'm sure they are well able to defend their corner if they were here. And if they were here, some of the blokes would stop reducing their behaviour to cave-man mode and be less sexist
By the way, I love the avatar!

Males go out and hunt so have the skills they need for that . . Females stay home raise children into adulthood who keep the species going That (past tense) is essentially the message, and it's hard-wired although everyone is on a sliding scale. No-one should be upset at this, rather we should embrace the differences between males and females.

I've really been turned off other hi-fi forums by all the casual misogyny that gets bandied about. Very interesting links, Martin. I'm disposed to a certain caution when it comes to drawing broad conclusions about human experience and behaviour from work in cognitive psychology, but in any case the results produced by this research program are very interesting. I wonder if, or to what extent, the skewed gender ratio for ASD contributes to the gender imbalance in hi-fi and similar hobbies.

No-one should be upset at this, rather we should embrace the differences between males and females. Much of this is theoretical conjecture and is becoming old fashioned dogma . What you are essentially saying is social structures of the past have become hard wired in to our brains . The very term hard wired is descriptively poor. thier are a number of issues it fails to take in to account . 1] brains are developed socially and post natal . 2] humans are not animals they are not slaves to thier instincts , desires or motivations . Because they have language . through language they interpret and change themselves and thier world . What Giddens called the double hermenutic . If I am a dog and i get the urge to lick my balls in public I do it , if i am a functioning human being and I get a similar urge , I draw upon years of socialization and knowledge and conclude that aint a good idea . The very act of controlling my base instincts overtime modifies them . Believe it or not , i dont get a desire to lick my balls in public . the idea of darwinian instincts, human nature or ways of being fixed in time and space throughout history is to my mind absurd and niave .

You aren't arguing with us, you're arguing with the likes of JoAnn Deak...
Her lectures and conversation about her subject conveyed deep insight into the function of the brain and the basic 'hardwiring' of some instinctive behaviours. This is an area where the professionals have conducted exhaustive research and it cannot so easily be dismissed.

I am not arguing i am simply presenting an alternative view .
however , funny thing , i googled jo ann deak and was given only sites to her commercial books
i googled joann deak critique and was told by google some sites have been removed due to data protection !!!!!
sounds like cod psychology to me . i will continue to investigate .
edit - it would seem she as used the recent EU ruling on privacy to rid the net of critique . she doesnt even have a uk wikipage .
