Meridian announced a new digital streaming format on Friday: Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) Does anyone know anything about it? Here's some stuff from their website.Sourced from the original studio master recording as approved by the creative team, MQA combines an advanced new digital sampling technology that captures extremely high frequency timing and detail in an audio signal with an equally novel system to “encapsulate” that data into a form for delivery using any lossless file format or streaming. The listener’s decoder reconstructs the entire original signal, bringing up an indicator confirming that what they are hearing is exactly the same as the original master. Without the decoder, the listener enjoys CD quality reproduction. Its most advanced form, “MQA Studio”, uses the technology in the studio to generate an even higher quality master recording as the source.

Sounds interesting. Who will have the hardware to support it (apart from Meridian, of course)?

That was my thought - I supposed they imagine they can make a packet from selling licences?

I have had a couple of chances to listen to a system with MQA, I have listened to quite a few different high end systems from different manufacturers, at shows hiFi stores etc, each time I have heard the Meridian MAQ demo it has been amazing almost an emotional experience , I heard that Tidal have already signed up with them as a streaming service and i have been led to believe that several large electronics companies are in discussions, this looks really interesting.

As always the trouble with new formats is the amount of music one can get. I suspect one for the strict audiophiles only. Shame as it sounds like it actually might be quite good

I know a little from the couple of sessions I have been to. They are in discussion with the majority of the music labels, you do not need to re-record old material to get benefit you can go back to studio masters regardless of the age, they compress the master to about the size of CD FLAC but imbed additional information, including information where they have it about the recording equipment used MIC DAC etc Im a bit fuzzy here but I think where they do not have this even on playback they can make assumptions based on the music (don't quote me on this bit) this is all part of how MQA makes enhancements over just using super high resolution, the have used a lot of psychoacoustic research findings to decide how to present to music and I believe the MQA algorithm also gives a benefit on music that has not been already encoded again not 100% how much difference it makes, the acoustic bit is well beyond my knowledge but I love hearing Bob Stuart talk about it Anyway we have a while to go yet before its readily available but keep your eyes and ears open for more info Im am for one really exited about this.
