Along The Way was released earlier this year. I've suggested it simply because I really like it, and I think it's fairly accessible, so there's a chance that others might like it too. Mark Mcguire was one third of the band Emeralds, who have released five albums since 2008 - a favourite of mine is Does It Look Like I'm Here?. He's a producer and multi-instrumentalist, though guitar features most prominently in his work. In addition to an extensive back catalogue of limited releases on small labels (see discogs), Mcguire has produced three major solo albums - with Along The Way being the most recent - and one large compilation. His earlier work includes quite a lot of ambient and drone music, but this album has a much more melodic focus, and some tracks are even close to songs, though there's still a big emphasis on tone and texture. It's a very light and pretty album, which might put some people off, but I enjoy the sound so much that the more sugary moments don't bother me. I have a hard time thinking about this album in terms of individual tracks, as I've only ever listened to it continuously, and the transitions are often fairly unobvious, with everything fitting together very neatly, so I can't really pick any favourites. Here's a Spotify link (I hope this works): NB. I've done something a bit different with the poll - I hope that's okay

Hi Tom
Spotify album links are currently broken, so I've posted the first track for you (which leads on to the others anyway). Thanks for this Album Choice, I look forward to hearing something a little different.

I've been listening to it and am also reminded of the Windham Hill new age catalogue. It's innocuous but there is nothing like a memorable tune to hang on to or keep in my mind. I've had to vote 'indifferent' as that is how it leaves me feeling. Sorry!

Heh. Hilariously, this sort of thing is more or less as tuneful as it gets for me! Other items on the short-list were far less, er, listenable. No need to apologise though - the world would be a boring place if we all liked the same things, and I find the responses interesting.

I'd be struggling! I don't really enjoy music for tunes and tend to dislike things that are 'catchy'. I'm much more interested in the tonal/spatial qualities of the individual sounds, and of the compound sound that they collectively compose, and then in the way in which they're structured over time. Tunes or melodies - while they're not so related to tonal quality or timbre - are, of course, a form of structure, but I tend to find the more catchy ones less interesting.

There are genres of music that are similar in that they create sound-pictures and texture - for instance, Debussy and Tangerine Dream - that I do listen to. Another more extreme example (i.e. tends towards your spectrum) would be Ligeti, and I love the Requiem, for instance.
Ask me why I like Tangerine Dream but not so much this album and I struggle to exactly put my finger on it!

Yeah I'm very keen on Debussy and Ligeti, and Tangerine Dream stuff from their 'space music' period.

Thought I would revisit those albums that I hadn't vote/commented on.
Liking this one so far, it was a bit slow to start but has picked up pace. I will listen to the end before voting.
