Woohoo. Just seen this is now on Eurosport...
Missing the tennis until that fires up next year. Skiing will fill the gap.
Aspen, USA first run of the women's giant slalom in Aspen, USA. Austrian Anna Fenninger is the defending giant slalom and overall champion and starts the weekend as favourite.
Then it's the men's downhill in five mins from Canada
Anyone else like skiing? I've not skied in a good few years but did a lot living in Sweden for 10years and travelling up north with the Ericsson Alpine club. I even competed a couple of times in Giant Slalom. Scary when you see the stats of average speed though! You think - feck me, if I crashed on that run, it would have been bad!

I love skiing although I'm not that good at it. While the European resorts are good, they do get packed in peak season which is not so much fun. The best skiing I've ever had was in Hunter Mountain in New York, which is a superb resort with lots of different red and black slopes to try and, off season, was almost empty when I was there a couple of times a few years ago.

Yep, used to ski all the time as a kid, started instructing when I was 14 at weekends, it was a good earner!
At primary school in Braemar, we used go skiing every Friday in the winter instead of lessons.
My mother used to be the accountant at Glenshee.

My right knee reminds me every day of my last skiing experience! I'll stick to riding motorcycles... Much safer pastime!

Yes, my knees, particularly the left one, I injured sailing (of all things), would probably not stand the strain any more. Perhaps it would if I really worked at it - was a bit dodgy with my increased frequency of tennis play, but over time it has strengthened it beyond being a problem.
Well the women's giant slalom was won by Eva-Maria Brem. She was the class of the field in the first run, and held her nerve to achieve 3rd in the 2nd run. The combined times giving her the victory by 0.59s.
The men's downhill was won by Kjetil Jansrud (Sotchi gold medalist in Super-G). The men's Norwegian team does have depth. I did not realise about Lund Svindal's freak injury - while playing an impromptu game of football with his teammates which could sideline him for the entire World Cup season! His Achilles!

Women's slalom from Aspen and Men's super-G from Lake Louise this afternoon... Jansrud has got to be pretty much the favourite, but much crystal has to pass beneath the wax...

My claim to fame is beating Graeme Bell in a race once! :-)
Just kids at the time.

Wow, that's cool! Mikaela Shiffrin leads after the first run. Only a couple of tenths lead. An American has not won there since 1981. But she is the Am lady of the moment. Is it me. Or are the young tennis and skiing ladies getting hotter / more glam? As Billy Connolly once said, "I love getting older, everyone else looks great" Gents super-g up in 5.

Looks like Jansrud has it, after a cracking first run.
Yes - Great job. He really has taken over where Svindahl has left off, so far this year.

I caught the Women's super-G this evening - nice skiing from Eva-Maria Brem - She had a massive lead of ~1.3s after the first run and held her nerve on the course that was wearing after all the runners. They do have what they call TV breaks and the course workers get out there and do some speedy repairs - that gives a slight advantage to the 5th or 6th from the end and boosts the competitiveness. She made no mistakes and won it by 0.53s.
The 2nd and 3rd placed made mistakes and it's amazing what a too directly taken or late gate does to the times...

Giant Slalom in Åre Sweden today. I've skied there! They were to be in the Alps this weekend, but there is no snow there, so Sweden organised a quick but efficient race.
Eva Maria Brem was the class of the field in the 1st run of the giant slalom. Tina Maze puts in a great 2nd run to win. Brem 3rd. Swede Sara Hector in 2nd. Great result for her.
Anna F in 6th
