I was looking at the Tado website and came across this image of a family enjoying their new heating system. However, look closer and to the left and there is an interesting bit of kit on the shelf, with records on top. But what is it?

Hmmmm....it looks old, but it could be modern and 'in the style of..' The TT and the speakers n that room are oldish though (speakers are in another photo elsewhere on the site). There aren't many hifi receivers with circular dials that I can think of: Sansui, Sony, HH Scott and HK... but it's not any of the ones I know.

Never mind the old hifi - I am sure that's a dirty great big hash plant! No wonder they are so wonderfully relaxed and happy

A stereo receiver is the right call. Panasonic did a round dial receiver, but it's not one of theirs either - the search goes on AFC needle or two lights to balance anyone Me, I had one of these as my first amp. All of 80w music power! How about this one for a round dial jobbie - JVC though

The more times I see that, the more I think it's a modern thing designed 'in the style of'. Three reasons: It's taller than it should be for a classic receiver - they tended to go wide rather than tall if they contained more internal gubbins The fascia colour doesn't seem right I think I can see a red vertical frequency pointer just to the left of centre of that round 'dial'. That doesn't seem right to me, so I reckon it's the work of modern design.

I thought the proportions and knobs (but not the colour) look like the early Marantz style.

Yes, I think with that and the pseudo-scope (!) that's the look they're going for.

I think the cheap repro is possibly right.. but not a modern repro, perhaps a cheap 80's "Ooo, this is pretending to be proper hifi but is flimsy and plasticy" like started to appear back then.
