Yw Martin I loved Prometheus and Covenant as well. I totally get that's it my own wiring and past experiences but I in fact have difficulty watching the older Alien films. I love those stories but I mean sitting through the actual films unfortunately for me they feel very dated, though I still can always sit through the first Alien film. But I wouldn't argue with anyone that loves those classics more than the newer additions to the storyline.
What I like about Prometheus and Covenant is that it's kind of like those stories retold, but at today's speed and manner of interaction between characters. And they are both visually stunning for me especially Prometheus.

No, the first Alien is an all-time masterpiece. It's hard watching it but it's so well acted that it beats almost all competition into submission, with the possible exception of Carpenter's The Thing, also exceedingly well acted.

Understood. Yes the first Alien and The Thing, but especially Alien for me, are astounding, important, breathtaking masterpieces that both still hold up well. The depths that were reached in their creativity make those almost timeless and still have me scratching my head at how they could have come up with it.

I thought that "Rakka" was probably the flipside of District 9. The aliens in it reminded me of the prawns in the way they moved, but these gator-lizard-alien-things are more like prawns on steroids with a side-order of PCP.

Man the way they took those buildings down? Nutty.

Man the way they took those buildings down? Nutty. Yes, that was different and very well done considering they used stock footage.

Considering it's an American TV movie I thought it was terrific, and it has a great cast too as I remember.

Not the best screenplay of the novel but again watchable.

In the same vein (forgive the pun) I watched Bram Stoker's Dracula in 4k on Apple TV.
It's not perfect, especially Keanu Reeves and Anthony Hopkins hamming it up but there's a lot to like about it - Gary Oldman is superb, Winona Ryder is very credible and FF Coppola shows off some fantastic visual tricks in the film and some opulent production design. The only thing that really dates it for me is the music score which seems overly romanticised to play up this side of the Count's nature.

I bought Bram Stoker's Dracula on Laserdisc many years ago. I really liked the tricks with shadows and agree about Oldman's performance.

Extraction (2020) action at its best I had a hard time with Extraction and struggled to reach 20 mins before turning it off, too much like a Michael Mann film for me unfortunately. I can however see it's appeal if you like Hollywood action films, as it seemed very well put together from what I saw, just not my thing.
After Parasite, my next best film of the year is Portrait of a Lady on Fire. I was at times literally holding my breath watching this one, utterly superb and I've seen it twice now (on Mubi.com). The cinematography, script and acting is world class. The chemistry between Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel is spellbinding. However, it's possibly not really for Extraction or action film fans - definitely a slow burner

The best Michael Mann film for me was The Keep.

Accompanied by a drop of Scotland's finest?
