*** Midsommar SPOILERS ***
I think what bothered me about the end Tim, well besides my own personal distaste for witnessing that kind of demise, was that I saw it coming, and not even from that one scene where he was waiting to be spoken to, and I hoped that a film this interesting wouldn't need to use that as a culmination to its story.
But, two things that fascinate me here are
1. Anytime I see that in cinema, because of my own issues maybe, I immediately dismiss that piece of work and won't finish it, but in this case the journey up to the end is so interesting to me that I haven't lost respect at all for the director and will re-watch the film.
In fact I started watching game of thrones years ago, very briefly, and then stumbled upon a clip of something that happens way later in the GOT saga and it turned me off and I haven't watched an episode since. But not in this case of Midsommar, it just wasn't for me, yet I still respect it.
2. The breathtaking gore in this movie somehow has not turned me off enough to not watch this again to see again the things that I did like. I can't remember that happening for me before in a film or series.
There's a movie called Hard To Be A God that looks utterly alien in its presentation and premise that I partly want to see but haven't ever spoken to someone who has seen it.

Wow. Interesting. Thanks, Tim. Ye it does look like a slog that's for sure. If it's ever available for stream ill check it if it's not expensive and see if I can hang with it.
What a wild premise.

You obviously know the plot, but without any spoilers it is extremely bizarre. If you thought Midsommar was bizarre, this makes that look like little league.
Put it this way, if Hard to Be a God were scored as a 10/10 for bizarreness, then Midsommar would be 1/10. It's off the scale weird and I'm glad it's in black & white for some scenes, as I can make believe it's chocolate and not something else brown!!!
I'm glad I've seen it as I enjoy a challenge, but I have no desire to watch it again, so good luck

Haha wow, interesting. I may actually skip it after reading your 1/10 - 10/10 scale.
I don't automatically hate something if it's bizarre or weird but for me it can get to a point where it feels forced just for the sake of being bizarre, plus, I can't follow along anyway because, seemingly, to me, it's designed to not be understood.
It's for that reason I could never get on with poetry. It feels like reading another person's secret language that was not meant for me.
Tim, BTW did you ever get to give Hereditary a second viewing? I remember that a lot of people were disappointed in it because the marketing for that film when it came out was ridiculous tainting people's expectations with comparisons to the Shining and the Exorcist.
I personally don't believe Hereditary is anything like the Shining other than that you get to know a family and their issues quite well. I can see why someone wouldn't care much for the film for a number of reasons, but also for a number of reasons I just happened to click with that film right away.

Well I feel emotionally exhausted having just seen 1917.
It's an astonishing achievement, to make such a human story out of such a technically fiendishly difficult film to make.
Simply one of the great war films and one of the great films of our time.

This is the year that Dune will be released. Only Ridley Scott or Denis Villeneuve could pull it off so I'm glad the latter is directing it. Having first read the book at the age of 12 I have been waiting all my life for a good film production and I have high hopes. If it equals Blade Runner 2049 then there's my film of the decade all done and dusted. To be fair, the David Lynch production was a lot better than people give it credit for, but some of the acting was wooden and they ran out of money and time before the film and SFX could have been completed properly. Have you seen the Sci Fi channel mini series Martin, very good imo.

Yes I have, Ali. I thought it was better overall storytelling and a more linear following of the book than the David Lynch film, but that the latter had better imagery and a stronger cast. I guess I want it all, with the wide cinematic sweep that Villeneuve put into BR 2049.

The Lighthouse - Needs more foghorn.
Right up my alley a nice little piece of work where both actors are completely swallowed up by their role and become just two more elements of the suffocating atmosphere and the setting.

Last night I caught up on the Star Wars trilogy - bought a bluray of The Last Jedi as missed it at the cinema ...
What a fantastic film, I thought it was beautifully directed and stunning to look at even on my old HD screen. Seemed to bring a lot more emotion into the film than The Force Awakes which I really enjoyed but not as much as this.
Hope to see the final film at the cinema this weekend.

Well I feel emotionally exhausted having just seen 1917. It's an astonishing achievement, to make such a human story out of such a technically fiendishly difficult film to make. Simply one of the great war films and one of the great films of our time. I've seen it 3 times now Jules and I can't fault it. The cinematography is drop dead gorgeous, pure genius and the best thing since Blade Runner 2049, but that's to be expected as it's Roger Deakins again. He paints with a camera like Renoir did with a brush.
It's a breathtaking experience on the big screen and I'm going to see it again next week at an IMAX.
For me it's now a 10/10 film (not many of those in my list) and the best war film I've ever seen despite it not being a conventional war film. It manages to portray the horror and futility of war without excessive violence and gore. I was right there on that journey for the entire 2 hours, a remarkable achievement and it deserves every one of it's 10 Oscar nominations - a masterpiece of modern cinema.
My only observation is I wish it could have been shot on film, rather than digital, but that would have been impossible and like asking for the moon

Yes it would have been somewhat costly to do all of those multiple long takes on film!
But the HD didn't offend me - the format and grading options have come on a long way since I had to move onto it from 35mm and mostly hated it.

Went to see the final Star Wars film at 10am this morning!
Needless to say I fell asleep a number of times during the first half that didn't exactly grip me, but the finale was rousing stuff.
One to see again when I can stay awake but was really the last chance to see at the cinema locally.

The village film club showed "Judy", last night. Excellent, and a stunning performance by Renée Zellweger.

I haven't seen 1917 and hope to see it Friday but I am so happy to see that this film is getting absolute top ratings literally everywhere. Seems it was done right, and then some.

We saw 1917 tonight and it was every bit as epic as has been reported. If George MacKay doesn't win an oscar for that performance, then there is no justice.
The cinematography is right up there with Blade Runner 2049 and the tracking is simply mesmerising and defied my attempts to think through how they did it over water and through rubble.
Greatest war film? I don't know, it has Das Boot and Apocalypse Now to contend with. Happy to put it up there with those two, though.
