I heard about Audition ages ago and heard that it was bonkers. Somehow I've never found it anywhere. It's worth looking out for, bit of a classic . . . first time I saw it I was completely blind to everything. A mate put it on and just said "you're in for a treat Tim". He was right, but he did know my tastes.

Gosh, Audition reads well so I'll be on the look-out for it.

Gosh, Audition reads well so I'll be on the look-out for it. I really love it Martin, but as you know I gravitate more towards Indie and World Cinema, especially S. Korean and Japanese films . . . I have absolutely no clue as to whether I think you'll like it or not
So no money back guarantees!

We watched "Perfect Days" on MUBI this evening. What can I say? A masterpiece.

Civil War
Great sound, some powerful imagery, predictable and badly orchestrated ending, ultimately so so.

I watched the much feted Perfect Days by Wim Wenders on Amazon Prime.
The film shows you the daily routine of a Tokyo toilet cleaner and subtly depicts the things he does and the people he meets, that give meaning and structure to his life. I can't call it "remarkable" but it is certainly a very good film made in a gentle documentary style, which in turn asks some questions of how we live our own lives.
Watching it in 1080p I really thought it looked like it had been shot on film but it's actually very well made digital film, shot using old Canon lenses that give the film a softer, nostalgic analogue feel. It's also made in 4:3 aspect ratio, drawing you closer into the main protagonist and not what's going on around him.

Furiosa
It's bloody fantastic. I thought Fury Road was quite cool but it wasnt my movie like this one. Directed by George Miller the same guy who directed all of the previous Mad Max films.
I'm sitting at theater now for a 2nd viewing.
If you like this world this film may be the coolest of all of the glimpses into it. Once the 3rd act begins and we are on the move it is fucking magnificent with the best pacing I've ever seen in my life. I'm a fan now and will go back and study each film .

On my way to see this thing a 3rd time. Who's with me? 3rd act is everything to me now. It is all.
Chris Hemsworth with his prosthetic features makes for a surprisingly menacing figure as deep down you know he's evil no matter how nice he comes across but there's another layer there too that is a bit unsettling. The more goofy his funny Australian accent sounds with the endearing sounding terms he uses "yor lovey dovey" the more sinister he seems.

Each to their own but I thought it was absolute nonsense, tiresome beyond belief! Seems I wasn't alone too, in a 180 seat screen there was one other person in there . . . I found it exhausting.
Still, by enduring that torture it gives me enough time credits for the month, for 5 free films of my choosing

My Mad Max appreciation:
Mad Max: iconic, rough and basic but creates the world and sets the scene. 8/10 Mad Max 2: great, very watchable, good-versus-bad in an interesting world, funny. 9/10 Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome: over the top, getting a bit silly although still watchable. 7/10 Mad Max Fury Road: utter dreck, disconnected from the originals, action without purpose. 2/10 Mad Max Furiosa: will probably never see it.

Haha Jules. It's a good one.
I think the problem for me with Fury Road was that there was not a single character I liked. So the film was incredible looking but there was nothing for me to latch onto.
Furiosa is the opposite in that regard. Lots of memorable and loveable characters. Anya Taylor-Joy is actually a scary person. She comes across like an old veteran and anybody would be in big trouble if they crossed her.

No way Tim. I wouldn't do that and I don't think you're re an idiot.
I do however think you've hitched your wagon to kermode's star and a lot of movies never had a chance with you.
We both are just trying to fill our cup with enjoyment. I've filled mine. I hope you've filled yours. It makes no difference what either of us are drinking as long as we get our fix.

Rather like music, I can't even forecast what films I will like, let alone put them into obvious genres. I know I don't like most Hollywood output, although I'm probably not as far across the spectrum as Tim in that regard.
I do like great ensemble acting and a good script. Those two alone will get far with me.

There's magic going on with really good films and TV series Doesn't always have to be everyone perfect to still be good - and there are the ones that ought to be fantastic but fall flat
British set ups frequently score very highly. US a lot less for me

The problem with that is when I decide to go and see a film I always avoid any reviews and normally avoid trailers. I expect lot's make a decision from a trailer/review, but I'm the opposite, the less I know about a film before seeing it the better. If I like a film, that's when I read the reviews and sometimes if I haven't fully sussed a film out, I'll see it a second time before reading reviews, as I like to formulate my own interpretation before being influenced by critics - so the above isn't correct IMO.
Overall I would say Mark Kermode and I 'generally' share the same taste in films. His dislike of Michael Bay, Guy Ritchie and Marvel is an opinion we both share, but the common denominator is the type of film. I wouldn't like Bay, Ritchie or Marvel if Mark Kermode said they were the best thing since sliced bread . . . for me those types of films are mind numbingly dull (I'm being generous here!), doing nothing for me and I don't need anyone to affirm that and I definitely don't follow other peoples stars! I think if you asked MartinT he'd agree I don't need anyone to help me form my opinions
Both Kermode and Mayo liked Furiosa and it seems other films in the franchise, so I don't always agree with him.
