Thanks Martin. I think the key is to use a couple of decoupling cones and a single coupling 'cone' to provide a single 'drain path'. Perhaps something less 'wobbly' than sorbothane would be best for the decoupling task.
What have you found to be best in this role - from reading the site, I see that you've been doing some extensive experimentation!
I wonder if a single RDC cone would do well as the 'coupling' or 'drain' cone?
I guess that my situation of having the kit on a fairly massive 'shelf' (the fireplace) is somewhat unusual - and therefore difficult to extrapolate from others' experience.. I'm planning to try some 'stuff' but don't want to spend much at this stage. I do have a Vertex AQ 'coupling tripod' which is designed to act as a 'drain path' in their 'Leading Edge' support range - haven't used it yet, but perhaps will try it with some RDC cones - these look like they will provide some decoupling and act a bit like the Vertex AQ 'acoustic labyrinth' idea. Any thoughts?

I think it will depend on how good a 'ground' your fireplace is. It's tempting to think of it as an immovable object, but it may be susceptible to wall vibrations. Only you will know. Try both coupling and decoupling ideas and listen for which you prefer. Then base a hybrid on that finding.
I know Hugo (Shuggie) of this parish swears by Stillpoints and Vertex.
