In an attempt to better quantify what I was trying to get at in another thread (which I think I failed at), this would be what I would describe as 'real music'. No tricks, electronic gizmos, over production or anything much at all, other than the melody and words. There's not much going on here other than a voice, guitar/piano and lyrics which mean something - real music, which I accept is subjective, but this is what floats my boat. This is a Nashville 'House Concert' hosted by Beth Nielsen Chapman which has a collection of my favourite artists, many of whom I have been lucky enough to see. Not sure if many here will be as enthralled by this as I am, but somebody might enjoy it? Back to Beth's - A Nashville House Concert If you like this and you missed it, this is a companion programme to Bob's show Bob Harris: My Nashville

And before anyone slaps a 'genre' label on it, this ain't Country & Western . . . . (and there's no Banjo's Chris)

More than welcome guys, wasn't sure it would be to anyone's taste here, but even if you don't like it, you might appreciate the songwriting talent on show? Topping my list of favourites would be Jason Isbell (last years album of the year for me was Southeastern by him, which also won the Americana MA best album/artist award), Angel Snow, Gretchen Peters and John Fullbright. But the whole concert is pretty good apart from a shaky performance by Kim Carnes, whose voice has now gone.
It's caused quite a stir on Twitter too, seems a lot really enjoyed it which makes me think it should have been on BBC4 as a mainstream show, rather than the Red Button?

this would be what I would describe as 'real music'. No tricks, electronic gizmos, over production or anything much at all I could easily say that about much classical music, but it's a dangerous over-generalisation and I would probably be accused of elitism.
The reality is that I could have Mahler or Shostakovich all day but you could keep your Mendelssohn or early Haydn. So we're back to just expressing personal opinion again

I still don't think folk are understanding what I mean #scratheshead. I'm not dissing music that doesn't fall into the categories mentioned, each to their own and any music enjoyed by the listener is good music. What I mean is that 'to me' this is real music. It matters not though, if one person enjoys this I'm happy - if you could see inside my head you would know what I meant

I think it is hard to find the right language sometimes but get where you coming from. Basically music without studio effects. I split music into 3 categories for myself Music I enjoy Music I can enjoy over time Music I do not get

I don't think it's possible to classify or categorise music. Our reasons for liking music are complex and inexplicable. Tim's description of 'real' music strikes a query in my head, because I start trying to define 'unreal' music. Is it overproduced? Too 'commercial'? Electric? For me, there is music I like that spans the range from purely simple acoustic to massively produced. Which is more 'real' for me? There is another thread at the moment about strings and synth music. Some of it is gorgeous, but you can't even categorise it let alone define whether it's acoustic or electronic. Does it matter?

Not in the slightest if you enjoy it. I think it's what's in your head, what's real to me is going to be Marmite to others and vice versa and we all have very different heads! That list sums if up for me too John, but I have a fourth category 'Music I really dislike' There's a lot I don't get but could possibly listen to if needs be and then there is some I just can't and have to turn off.

The "don't get but could possibly listen to" are interesting because sometimes they turn into gems when you suddenly "get" them!
