It's fairly well known that The Jimi Hendrix Experience supported The Monkees on their first tour of the USA.
But who knows which acts supported Hendrix on later gigs and tours, both in the US and elsewhere? This kind of delving around in the backwaters of musical history often throws up interesting connections between bands and musicians and I find it thoroughly fascinating and rather entertaining. Isn't the internet fantastic?!
Here are just a few that I know of:
Moving Sidewalks
Featuring Billy Gibbons, later of ZZ Top, they worked with Hendrix in 1967. They released an album called 'Flash' which was very obviously influenced by Hendrix. My favourite track is 'You Don't Know The Life' - 1968 but they also had a bit of a hit with '99th Floor'
Here's the whole album, if you fancy it.
Baby Grandmothers
This band supported The Experience in Sweden in 1968. I love their album....right up my street! They also worked with The Mothers of Invention. The single 'Somebody Keeps Calling My Name' was a local hit at the time - it was an abridged version of this. Full album also supplied!
The Syn
This band supported The Experience for their first gig at The Marquee. The following track is only included for historical record - actual listening is not necessarily recommended!
Eire Apparent
This Irish(!) band supported Hendrix in '68. He produced and played on their only album. Henry McCulloch was their guitarist, later in Wings and Chris Stewart played bass, turning up later with Frankie Miller, Spooky Tooth, Joe Cocker, Jim Capaldi, Eric Burdon, Graham Bonnet, and Terry Reid. Here's the whole album.
