I would imagine the pedals were of the back pedal braking type Mike, handy at speeds in excess of 200mph.....!! I had them fitted on my old delivery bike although i think my max speed was only about 20mph (Wind assisted, Down hill).

A bit like Rollie Free. He broke the American motorcycle land speed record on September 13th 1948 with a top speed of 150 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats riding on a modified Vincent HRD (Black Shadow). He broke the record with a unique riding style, stripped down to only a speedo bathing suit, shower cap and sneakers, and lay flat on the bike to decrease wind resistance. He had developed special protective clothing, but ended up stripping down because his leathers tore after earlier attempts of reaching 147 mph.
