I don't use headphones enough otherwise I would pick up a used pair too, Jerry.
My Superlux HD668B still serve me well with the bedroom Pi when I need some sounds in bed.

Took myself by surprise trying headphones. Not sure what I wanted to achieve, seemed like a good thing to try out for some vague reason
The 3 in ear jobbies were cheap and verging on no good for anything
Sound quality of the Lavoltas really took me by surprise. They are small and *on* the ear so could be more comfortable and maybe cooler. Discovering my wireless Sennheisers have the same jack plug I must try them out

I use headphones pretty much every day - my Mrs is a late riser and I don't want to wake her with loudspeaker music, so headphones it is till 10.30 or 11 every morning. I find most headphones unsatisfactory in some way - I find they are just as personal as speakers if not more so. Some that are totally raved about are simply unlistenable for me. ... "on ears" are a definite no-no comfort-wise, I must have circum-aural. I can't abide most AKGs due to a characteristic colouration, Grados are too bright and forward, Sennheisers usually sound grainy to me, planar magnetics without exception among the many I have heard sound as if a layer of irritating "smooth" has been superposed ... and so it goes on! Beyerdynamics are usually at least listenable for me, of the 5 different Beyer models I have tried for me the DT 250 hit the spot and they are also the cheapest, although sadly far from the most comfortable (the DT 880 wins the award for most cumfy headphone I have tried).

I have never really enjoyed headphones. Comfort or sound issues have been the usual issue I have tried quite a few times.

Beyerdynamic DT 250 (80 ohms). Rather ridiculously - they have competed against far more expensive and technologically sophisticated designs - they are the best cans I have heard. Barely adequate in terms of comfort though and to look at them quite basic and cheap looking. But by gum, they sound great! This is the seller's eBay photo from my most recently acquired pair ...

Very intriguing I'd love to hear a pair but looking these up I wouldn't buy without audition personally.
But I am after a gritty non-fatiguing treble energy can. I had many Grados but the sound is mush immediately upon a/b with any can of a higher caliber but of similar tuning.
I'm after bright cans that are strident but so far have never heard a Beyerdynamic.

You want bright and strident? Umm. OK!
I would have recommended Grado for that - I've heard a few from SR80 up to PS1000, and have never heard any that were mushy to my ears. But we all perceive these things differently and are probably testing them with different music.
As previously mentioned, headphones are very personal items imo, and I would recommend a personal listen regardless of the rave reviews they may or may not have received!

I use two headphones.
Grado PS500 which I bought a few year ago when they came out. I like them because they have the usual Grado tone, but aren't anywhere near as bright as some of their other models. I rarely use thought to be honest.
The ones I use the most are a pair of Sennheiser HD 2.20 headphones that my wife bought me for Christmas that I use with my iPhone, usually just before going to sleep.

Sorry I meant to type bright but NOT strident. I post exclusively from smartphone and find it way more challenging to avoid mistakes than typing from pc. As for the Grados tbh they do not sound like mush to me until a/b comparison with another headphone that also bright but that has greater technical capability like an he400i. 400i/Grado 325e sound like the same sound signature to me just the 400i is more resolving, more separated across soundstage and with less boom/bloat to the bass. But I am interested in this Beyerdynamic dt250 that you've mentioned. Even the 400i with all of its capabilities could use little more grit/bite to the tuning for my taste. I wonder if the dt250 could be that sweet spot.

Ah yes, it does rather change things when the word 'not' has been omitted!
We may be hearing things differently - I don't think I have ever heard a planar magnetic with "grit/bite", it's what I dislike about the technology; the lack of tangibility and the unnatural smoothness of the sound.

Interesting.
I don't have a ton of experience with planars but most I've heard I'd say do have that smoothness and lack of sparkle, aside from EL-8 and he400i. I'm willing to bet that you've heard more planars than I have, and I've heard zero electro stats although I reaaaalllly hoped they would be the ultimate in gritty sound.
Ill give an example of something that maskes me believe the 400i planar has more grit (but still not enough for me) than other cans I've heard including all of the Audeze LCD series (aside from LCD4) and 20-30 dynamic drivers.
One example is the sound of an electricity sound effect on a track. So far only the 400i has revealed the texture/and detail/sizzle of that sound to me
Another example is this track.
I hear so much more crackle in this effect at 0:04 than any Grado I've heard be able to resolve.
Same here at 0:09
To be honest though I do hear a smoothness somewhere in the mix as well. I don't even know how to describe audio frequencies/attributes. I'm not really that educated about audio equipment, aside from the headphones I've heard.

Electrostatics can have much higher perceived rez than planar magnetics, and so for me are a much more interesting listen. No lack of sparkle with the good ones. Their problem is lack of lower freq heft and power. You can get stat/dynamic hybrids with a normal driver for bass and a stat mid/treble driver, but the few I have heard have not convinced me at all. A pair of Mitchell and Johnson I very briefly owned were appallingly coloured, for example. My conclusion atm is that conventional dynamic cans are the way for me to go. Those come in all flavours of sound and you just have to try them to see what suits you. YMMV, as ever.
