I had ghostery turned off accidentally and by the time the forum page and finished loading I had a Ghostery list of active trackers and adware that went off the screen! 74 in total..
Are they really necessary? They are pretty invasive in many ways if people aren't aware of adblockers etc, not to mention can slow an older machine down to a crawl. By comparison AoS for example has only 3 (although I'm not registered there so don't log in if that makes a difference? Just lurk). Oddly when Ghostery is turned back on it only has to block 6? So 74 load up when it's turned off, 6 load up when it's on.

Most forums make some money from adds and will charge traders. We have taken a non profit route but this means proboards have control over adware etc.

I'm not aware of that many, but it's ProBoards' bag. As John says, we elected not to pay for the hosting and the number of ads partly reflects the success of the forum.

Adblock plus lists 6 or 7 ads blocked on this site.

Right now I can only make it show three. Occasionally, you do get a block of 6 small ones at the bottom of the page making up a similar size to one of the bigger ones. One great feature of Proboards is that members can elect to make a payment that will make all banner adverts go away for a month for everyone.
As a gesture to our members, I have just bought 100,000 page views worth for a tenner. There ya go- this one's on me!

Adblock plus is free, and works on every web site.

I know, but if everyone used it, this site wouldn't exist because the advertisers would spend their money elsewhere.

Not just this site but EVERYWHERE on the interweb.

Then use a browser that blocks them, or in Firefox you can set it to clear your cache every-time you close the browser, which is what I use - closing the browser is a simple task. Ain't no such thing as a free lunch, you want the web like it is, someone's got to pay for it If it pisses you off so much, don't use it . . . simples (or take another happy pill!).

That's very generous, Chris, thanks! And lo, the banner ads are gone (but not the one in the bottom-right corner, which affects nothing anyway). I had a double-strength happy injection some six years ago. Still seems to be working

Can't remember where it was but a site I need to use for work always sticks up a warning first visit which states they need the adverts so could I please disable my blocker. I refresh the page and get through, without having to disable my adblocker.
It's not because I don't want the adds, its because I don't want to be running at a snails pace.
Advertisers should learn to use simple fast stuff, not stuff that boggs your computer down. they could all get a lot more customers if they respected our need to do what we are trying to do. They have got greedy.

Most forums make some money from adds and will charge traders. We have taken a non profit route but this means proboards have control over adware etc. Ah, that would explain it - I'd expect a load more added if controlled by third party in exchange for free hosting etc. Still, I am confused on the technical matter of why when I turn ghostery OFF, up to 74 trackers etc appear in its list but when it's turned ON it only states it's blocking 6 or so? e.g. showing it's blocking 5 now: AlmondNet, Google Analytics, NetShelter, Tynt and VigLink. Then I turn the blocking OFF and reload the page (err, I'd better copy this text first before I loose it! ) ... ... Here we go! 8.. 12.. 18.. 24.. 41! Stopped at 41 this time around, mostly advertising and some beacons. I can only guess that the initial 5 then feed back and others rush in like water through a hatch door in The Poseidon Adventure, acting like a conduit into my browser?

I've sussed it now - all these others are being loaded as part of the advertising content itself! So I now have an advert playing at the bottom of the screen and when it was initialising was when the list of adware grew and grew.
