Has anyone used/heard/built an amp or two using Hypex's amp modules?
I'm thinking of buying a couple of secondhand UCD400 modules (perhaps with one of their switch mode powersupplies for ease of build) as and when I see some up for sale in order to build my own stereo amp just to hear them after so many rave reviews. I'll not splash out on the nCore 400 amps yet - the UCD versions are a lot cheaper and many who have upgraded to nCore may have their old ones for sale.
Obviously that opens up a can of worms regarding pre-amps but I'll handle that when it comes to it (am currently just with a modest Pioneer A400 integrated).
So I'm just wondering what to expect in terms of sound - too forward, lacking texture or just highly detailed in all respects?

Lots of good reviews on them was considering this route when thinking about going fully active Pretty easy to build and plenty around modifications on the DIY forums

Yes lots acroos the board, from sound engineer type forums (like gearslutz.com) to diy forums to audiophile forums. Then there are all the mega expensive commercial products and the €10k Grimm Audio speakers originally used ucd modules (maybe they still do? sure I've read ncore mentioned in their description now).
I'm keeping my eyes peeled for modules for sale on the diy forums.. I've noticed some oem versions of the ucd400 boards on ebay slightly over-priced but I'm a little uncertain as to the difference, whether they require further building of input circuitry etc?
Would kind of like to make my own linear PSU but not too clued up on anything but the very basics (transformer -> bridge -> caps). Cases would probably end up being some old throw-away thing from ebay where there are plenty of broken studio amps or industrial equipment with sturdy cases ready made.

Yes easy to get a case from eBay The build seems mostly connectors apart from a bit of soldering Lots of power on tap so should have no issues with most speakers If you do decide to build write up a blog I am sure many would find it interesting
