Wolves are apex predator's take any apex predator out of an environment and it will change and history tells us not for the better. Sharks have been around for 600 million years as an apex predator and wait till they have gone and see what happens to the world's oceans? Here's a thought provoking timeline for you; The earth is 4.6 billion years old. Scale that to 46 years. We have been here for 4 hours and the industrial revolution began 1 minute ago. In that time we have destroyed more than 50% of the world's forests and wiped out legions of wildlife and rendered countless species extinct - the way we live isn't sustainable and to put it bluntly we are fucked unless we get our act together! Frankly I think we are too late and I'm kind of glad I don't have kids. Ebola could be seen as a crises or maybe it's an equalizer if it, or another devastating disease can reign unchecked wiping us out and to be honest, it could be a good thing for our future as guests on this fragile earth. Cheery soul aren't I!

It was going to be Aids but that still hasn't reached pandemic proportions. Ebola doesn't spread too easily. Something ultimately will become the arbiter of the great cull and, like you, I think we probably deserve it. Not on an individual basis, but as a species. If we ever achieve space travel on the scale necessary to reach other planets, we'll probably rape and pillage those, too.

Ants came to this planet long before man. Since then they have developed one of the most intricate civilizations imaginable, a civilization of great richness and technological brilliance. During the few seconds it takes you to read this sentence, some 700 000 000 ants will be born on earth.

I always assist them to leave the inside of the house. If they are outside I leave em alone (like everything else !)

I hope it's ok to post in in old topics. If not I'll refrain. I've belonged to other boards where it was considered beyond uncouth to drum up old conversations, for some reason.
I do wonder about this. In this way...(btw I agree that we are a disgrace, to this Earth, thus far, with many, many absolutely lovely individuals that I hope could be our saving grace)
How long have people thought this way? Is there evidence from 100 or 500 years ago of people discussing or writing of how harmful humanity is to this Earth?
I see a great deal of this talk now, maybe because now is when the accumulation of the signs of our destructive power have become so evident. But were there people seeing the trends and where they would lead, in many generations before?
I guess I'm asking this question to decipher if this is modern paranoia, like with the end of world prophecies, where every generation has it's end of the world date that comes and goes, or if this is all being discussed now because we've really only just now fucked ourselves so good that there is no going back and we are doomed.

Please contribute to anything you find anywhere on the forum, I find it great when threads like this get their second wind.
Back to your question, I think that it's probably only because recently our ability to properly see the consequences of what we were doing has become so good through advances in science and technology. As recently as the 80's most people with a concern about these things were generally considered to be fruit cakes, hippies and tree huggers.

It's going to be tough this one - I agree with Tim and Martin : nature may conjure up something to reduce the human population, therefore protecting itself, but humans are getting better at healthcare and treatments therefore affecting the balance point immensely.
Wonder what the next civilisation threatening event will be? I'd bet it'll be our own doing.

Good to see old and any threads back in use.
We are becoming more aware. Long way to go though.

They protect the wolves in Yellowstone Park purely for the reason that after many years of study and the decline in wolf numbers that it was having a devastating effect on the parks ecosystem. Basically the park was being destroyed by the number of deer and elk.
So they protected the wolves and might even have brought some in to improve the numbers. This is all from memory so I might not be 100% correct, but I don't think I'm far off 😉

Our skills in computation and maths have helped to extrapolate better. It mostly isn't good news.
However, it's difficult to know how much can be achieved when the two largest powers, USA and China, are happy to continue polluting on a vast scale.

For the last few months i have seen an increasing amount of Foxes around the Village. There is obviously something not right why they should be coming away for the open fields into the Village looking for food cos foxes will eat pretty much anything. I do not believe in killing them, they do not live that long anyway.. Every creature has been put on this earth to perform a duty, its wrong to kill them.
I used to put bowls of Dog food out this fed them & also stopped then ransacking the dustbins. I understand Parent concerned for young kids but i do not think i recall any incidents, same with your Dog, the Fox would run a mile if it saw your dog.. never seen any in packs, they always seem to come out of their comfort zones solo scrounging & they are a timid animal really.
Corner one it will no doubt go for you as would a Rat. But its not an attack it an attempt to escape.

The last of the original wolves in Yellowstone were cleared in the 1920s and they reintroduced some in the '90s. We went there in 2007 and saw wolves. That arsehole, King Trump has just removed protection for the Brown bear population in Yellowstone, so they will be hunted again. The best place to see wolves in the US (outside of Alaska) is probably the Sawtooth Mountains and Salmon River valley in nearby Idaho. Ray Mears made a documentary about them a few years ago and, rather spookily, the programme shows footage of him staying in the exact same cabin as we did when we went there!
The deer population in the UK has got out of control because they have no natural predators. People have been talking about reintroducing wolves here because of that, for a while but it's only recently that I've heard other people bring up something I have been banging on about for years, which is that bringing back the Lynx would be far more sensible.
