I think just buying components at any price point and not taking care over placement and cabling will give you sub-optimal results. The converse is true, even for budget systems.

Yes I find I have to be careful with cable placement Currently I have my dac upside down to best accommodate the cables i

Yes not allowing it to get in the way of music is good And I'm sure all of us have been there with our main systems at one point. Funny thing is I don't care about such things when using headphones and a phone, but I do care about Spotify Premium (especially listening to new stuff) probably the ultimate overall upgrade to my musical enjoyment, but it's nowhere near a CD or lossless file in terms of quality even at high res.

For me technology moves on and bang for buck we can achieve great music for an affordable prices....this is brought about by forums like this one were members share experience, knowledge and skill only for others to benefit from greater enjoyment of they're music. The generosity and support of the hi-fi community is boundless, hopefully we can encourage the next generation to enjoy music replayed well. Your right mate. The forums for me have been massively helpful. Before I got involved in forums I had a typical Richer Sounds ' high end ' system. Then I started to hang around Audio T and bought a pair of Naim Credo speakers. Fortunately at this point I found Pinkfishmedia, it was there that a chap called 2000rpm put me onto John Farlowe Expo gear and Epos speakers, which I spent many years buying and trying many different Expo Epos variations and my hifi had progressed from there. If I had stayed on the main dealer route without the help of the forums there is NO way I would have the system I have now.

To answer the OP the end point is never in the HiFi and always in the owner. In a way I have worked for years to get myself to my original point of listening to tunes and not the HiFi, so any major changes, I fear, would put me back onto the listening to kit road.

After years of worrying about hifi and box swapping - When I got my meridian dsp6000 I knew I was sorted for a very long time speaker and amp wise - I remember the relief of knowing I could stop worrying about amps and cables To make a bit step up I would need to find a considerable amount of money which I don't see happening in the near future Then the same with my inspire eclipse se12v2 - sorted Until I needed some money hence it being up for sale Now I have bought a 1210 I feel like I am back in the hifi game. Which I guess is fun - but overall I feel like it is a waste of precious time One thing I did wonder about was power cables - as my electronics cabinet is just a huge mess of cables into basic sockets and I wonder if sorting it out would help considerably? Always thought that was just foo?

I started with the mains and was very happy with the many improvements I made. My system sounded rubbish with switched sockets into 4 way adaptors and onto the kit. The earth was also so bad it was probably illegal Both changes were great improvements.
Then I heard Martin's system and realised I had some work to do. Kit and accessories have been upgraded to very great effect. My system now sounds wonderful - IE. the music sounds wonderful

Cool might PM you for a few tips some time Happy to oblige Mains is the cheap and to my mind the logical place to start. Having had a few changes to our earth and noticing an improvement each time I'm a fan of a good earth. Being stupid enough to use a switched socket and a couple of cheapo 4 way adapters after moving house, (previously using a dedicated bank of unswitched and dedicated supply in my last place) I shouldn't have been surprised the system was transformed. I mistakenly thought it was the room and or speakers - Nope mains. Then I started on mains cables for the kit - which surely couldn't work - oh yes they did and on from there with lots of changes

There's a point when I said "Yes, that is good enough" of course I'll take more ! Then im afraid Mike you have not yet reached the "End Point". For if you had then you would not only need more, you would understand that in truth ther could be no more.

Same as the way I work at work. There is always a better way.
With my system there was a time a couple of years ago when I was unhappy with it. Couple of months back I decided I had reached the point where I was very happy with the sound
If there is some tweak that gives more more music I'll take it. Don't think I will be kit being changed, more like accessories or the like

I agree with you Mike, I'm very happy with the way my system sounds, but I still love to experiment and look for upgrades, especially if they are cheap.

I would not have imagined I would be into supports and granite place mats on the kit
when I played with them and heard the improvements I had difficulty beleiving what I was hearing
Money spent - not a lot VFM - bonkers
