I've always fancied playing with WE 396a but they're a big bit pricey. Seen some of the 407a though and I seem to remember they are compatable. www.ebay.com/itm/331336295370 So 2 questions - can I swap them out and are they any good?

I haven't got a clue Chris. Have you checked on some of the online compatibility tables?

Yeah but it gets a bit techy. Basically the same but the 407a is a 20/40v variant. However it's easily powered by a 25 vac transformer and lm7820 regulator.? It pulls 100ma at 20v. Don't really understand that but there ya go. I think the short answer is yes but I'm not sure what the implications are of the different voltage. www.westernelectric.com/spec_sheets/407A.pdf

Very kind of you Ali but about half an hour after posting this I remembered your advice on the volume pot thing so I'm going to order that up instead of MORE valves! Thanks though!
