This evening's messing about was to get the Hifiberry DiGI + to work. I'm not going to use that going forward, I think, as I will use Rpi I2S directly to Najda. Wonder if there's a setting for that in Volumio? Still, got a Berry and want to try it. Once set up music flowed out from the Hifiberry via my trusty DPA enlightenment DAC and into my headphones. Hard to evaluate the sound on phones, clean, bit thin after the Chromecast Audio.. Million times better than the 3.5mm jack though Only fly in the ointment and something I don't want through my Vitavox S2's / Raal Lazy Ribbon tweets is an annoying 'pop' every track change. Will have to search to see if Martin's had that and has a fix for it.. Some pics. Nothing much to see here Or here

Now listening to Rpi3 and Hifi Berry DIGI + via spdif in.. Volumio, Lan connected, linear power.. It's a pleasing sound. Quite warm and rounded surprisingly. There's definitely some more Res, clarity and dynamics needed though. That would be the Hifiberry Vs Digione, John and Martin found out then.. Bass extension is very good though! I've been reading a bit more about Chromecast Audio.. it seems they have not yet fully unlocked 320K and it's Spotify's side of it!.. they are apparently working on it. It's 256K but a different coding or something.. That could very well explain why Tidal is always a slight step up over Spotify, whilst Martin is getting as near as damn it as good from Spotify as lossless?! Here's what I've been testing And for Martin (although this is one track from their later stuff I tolerate quite well ) The pop each track change thing.. I'd read that after a few reboots some had the popping each track disappear! Seems to be the case for me too. It's not doing it now connected up to my main rig. So that good for now.. Right, now to read up more about the clocking needed and direct into I2S Najda wiring. Laptop and WaveIO are toast I've way or another.. I will try accessing some FLAC files via the laptop networked just to be able to play them (Evil Urges etc..). This one deserves a mention too.. What a thing to happen at school. Gun culture Merica! At least we didn't have to deal with that in my day!

Or just sodding it and getting a Digione or even Signature

Either should be a nice step up

If you get the signature I send you the batteries for the clean side

The pop thing seems to be an issue with some DACs not liking the sync lock appearing and disappearing. Stan fixed it in the latest SEG firmware.
If you share your laptop folder containing the FLAC files, you can play them through Volumio using the NAS settings.

Ah that explains the pop thing on the DPA DAC (ancient) and not being present on Najda (being bang up to date, latest version..)
I'm thinking Allo DigiOne / Sig as it's totally compatible with all DACs and is plug and play..
Yes the file sharing / even get a NAS drive would make Lappy / WaveIO totally redundant and no doubt sound better too. Mentally I've already moved on..
One thing I was reading in the long Rpi thread was all the problems you had with corrupted SD cards, putting the proverbial in your spokes John. Did you get to the bottom of it? Solved, or did you give up with Rpi all together? Kind and interesting offer of a battery - perhaps that answered the above?
A follow on question, is there a power down procedure I should be following? I skim read all 62 pages and only latterly saw a bit about it. At the moment I'm just switching off. Should I be closing Volumio / Rpi more gracefully somehow? Hope not, I like a quick exit when I'm done.

I tend to never power down the Pi. However, when I do I always use Volumio's Shutdown command, wait 15s and turn it off.
Never had a problem with corrupted SD cards.

Yeah I might leave it on, but I'll have to reconfigure my power supplies which might not be ideal.

Tonight's messing about was to disable Pi's wifi and Bluetooth. I also set her to 24/96 and very high. This is on an Rpi3 with Hifiberry digi+ Had a little listen. Then I switched over to ChromeCast Audio. The CCA is a step up, no doubt. I'm hoping the Allo Digi one will be an even bigger step up! SQ overall, res, dynamics, attack, quietness (when it should be) are all great. The sound stage is different. That is quite noticeable. Then onto Tidal. On Avratz - Infected Mushroom Spotify does a great job. It's a really close thing.. Tidal had a slightly deeper immersive sound with the edge on impact and dynamics at the moment.. BTW some are saying Spotify's / CCA's 256K OGG is the equivalent of 320K mp3. I dunno! Does my head in so I'll let my ears decide.. I'm demoing my system tomorrow. I'll be using Tidal and CCA for that no doubt.. Another question.. Where should I buy the Digione from to avoid taxes on import? Rather pay upfront or from within the EU.. Do you guys think the Signature will be audibly better? Is it a no brainer to get that while I'm at it? Anyone got a Digione / Signature they want to flog?

Spotify is 320k Ogg. Extremely close to 16/44 Red Book to my ears.
You can buy a DigiOne from the Volumio shop, it comes from Italy so no additional taxes.

Also on the Allo site it has an European site and can buy form there just press the Euro flag when you enter the site A word of warning with the signature. It was certainly better but I had to send back as locking issues made it unlistenable but no issues with the DigiOne

Concerning about the Signature.. Wonder if they've got to the bottom it? How long ago was it you sent it back John?

The Signature problem was with the SEG so it could work perfectly for you, Steve.
I modified my DigiOne for separate power, which you could try at some stage and save your pennies.

Ah thanks Martin (is that the Seg Caimen dac)? I've not followed DAC stuff at all..
The signature does have some tasty components too..

The seg would not lock onto to the signature I did think from the little I heard it, I thought it was a good few steps up. If I had not done so much to the seg I would of gone down a different DAC route
