Hello All, Not been posting much lately as been practicing guitar, but still listening to music. I saved this album up from when I listened to John Cale - Guts, a US Import Compilation a few weeks ago. Unfortunately 'Guts' the album is not on Spotify, Qobuz or Tidal. However the tracks are taken from the albums 'Fear', 'Helen of Troy' and 'Slow Dazzle' and are also on 'The Island Years', which is what I put in the links below, so you can listen to just the tracks from 'GUTS' below or if you have the GUTS listen to all of 'The Island Years'. I think most of you will know of John Cale(Velvet Undeground), but he is also a prolific artist in his own right and a very successful producer. He is probably one of our British unsung guitar heroes and I think the tracks above show him off and his quirkiness. I hope you enjoy them. The 'Guts' Track listing is A1 Guts A2 Mary Lou A3 Helen Of Troy A4 Pablo Picasso Written-By – Jonathan Richman A5 Leaving It Up To You B1 Fear Is A Man's Best Friend B2 Gun B3 Dirtyass Rock 'N' Roll B4 Heartbreak Hotel open.qobuz.com/album/0073145242352tidal.com/browse/album/636587?u

Thanks for the AC, Adrian. I know very little of John Cale so I shall listen to this with interest.

I'm working my way through the tracks you list. Mostly they seem workmanlike with a voice I'm not particularly warming to. Helen of Troy is a better constructed song with more interesting drive. Leaving It Up To You also made me pay more attention.
Fear Is A Man's Best Friend is the most notable song, probably why it features first in the bigger compilation.
I'm not really keen on his voice which is limiting my enjoyment of his material.

Have this on LP as well as most of his output The Island Years was stuck in my playlist a while back when I was still buying CDs
Good as an intro to Cale or if this is all the Cale you want
If you like the sounds he makes then The Island Years is the one
Sabotage is great. Only YouTube has it. I have it on LP
Score for this specific album I'll have to think about

BTW Guts refers to Kevin Ayers having extra marital relations with Cale's then wife

I'm giving this a 4/5. Cale is paying hid debt to Velvet Underground all over this album, but mostly it reminds me of Michael Moorcock (yes THAT Michael Moorcock)'s " New Worlds Fair" album, which had a large chunk of Hawkwind, Snowy White, and some other mates providing the band who were billed as the Deep Fix. I'm not sure how often I'd play this album - I think it caught me in just the right mood this afternoon - but it would get re-played. Nice one, Adrian.
