YAY! Bring it on!
One of the very best albums ever created, in my opinion. I wonder what Wilson can do with it? Difficult and highly complex with a tendency to get muddled when things get busy. I think I'll preorder now, based on how fab the Fragile DVD-A is.

Yes - Relayer (DVD-A Remaster)
Relayer is symphonic in scale and a very dense recording in places with a tendency to sound both harsh and muddy all at once. There is a lot going on there and neither the vinyl nor CD issues to date have been very satisfactory. Up until now I've always had to listen through its deficiencies to access the stupendous music underneath. What I always wanted was what happened with Fragile: a hi-res DVD-A release. We've got not only this, but a full Steven Wilson remix which has brought out so much more from the music in a sympathetic manner, without destroying it.
I've been listening to the 2014 24/96 version (there are four versions of the album on the DVD-A disc, plus the CD). This remix is stupendous. Most obvious is how the drums are brought forward in the soundstage and now have real impact. There are bigger dynamic swings. The opening to Sound Chaser is visceral. Secondly is how the strands of detail in the highly busy sections, like the battle scene in The Gates of Delirium, are now more easily heard and delineated. Cymbals easily heard! Anderson singing along in sections I hadn't noticed before. Thirdly is how the space in the achingly beautiful To Be Over is even more haunting. The whole is a really wonderful rework by Wilson, obviously done lovingly and without wanting to stamp his mark on it.
The packaging is nice and the booklet mainly talks of Moraz' integration into the band after the departure of Wakeman.
An epic album which finally sounds as good as we always knew it to be. Grab it before they withdraw it. 10/10 without a doubt.

Point on DVDs
Would a CD not be able to do get near DVD quality ? A normal CD player won't play this so do you need a reasonably good DVD or one that outputs to a DAC ?
Is this another marketing opportunity for the music biz to re release everything in DVD hi res ?

No, you need a DVD-A player to play this disc, not many of those around. The Ayre is almost unique in playing both SACD and DVD-A hi-res formats. Most DVD-V players won't play them. The Blu-ray disc will probably get more sales due to the number of players out there.
CD is red-book standard which is 16/44 (16-bit, 44,100 samples per second). DVD-A can go up to 24/192, although the Yes disc is 24/96. So CD cannot compete although the reality is that it can get close.

Our Steven is a bit of a cool kid isn't he Martin. There isn't much he does that I don't enjoy and I'm glad you like this, but I kind of knew you would

I'm still going through all my Porcupine, Blackfield (a particular favourite) and Storm Corrosion music, hearing more and enjoying most of it very much.

I'm still going through all my Porcupine, Blackfield (a particular favourite) and Storm Corrosion music, hearing more and enjoying most of it very much. At first listen a lot of his work can often seem similar, but listen to it carefully and the subtleties emerge. I don't really get Bass Communion though, but I don't dislike it - it's just a little more of a challenge. I've been fortunate to see him, Blackfield and Porcupine Tree and I know it may sound corny, but my life is richer for it - I really rate him a lot. He's a music geek and an Aryton Senna of the musical world in my book, whatever he turns his hand to he excels at. What I find fascinating is who goes to his shows (always good to crowd spot at a SW gig), they are normally a real who's who of the music industry, so he's clearly held in very high regard by other musicians.

You could rip the DVD-Audio and play the files back, which is what I do these days. None of my DVD-A discs get played any more, and it's the same with CDs. They see the optical drive of the computer and they're ripped. It's not difficult to rip DVD-A material, and I've been doing it for quite a while - Foobar has plugins that will enable DVD-A discs to be read, or you could use a program called DVD Audio Extractor.

Yes, Chris, of course you're right. I was rather thinking of disc playback methods.
Do you have either the Fragile or Relayer DVD-A? The hi-res masters are really excellent. I guess they might be available as downloads, too.
