If it has a rotating drive, just leave it running.

Windows 10 really shows the difference between old style rotating drives and SSDs, which are an order of magnitude faster.

Windows 10 really shows the difference between old style rotating drives and SSDs, which are an order of magnitude faster. Call me cynical but I think later W10 installs sniff a non SSD and runs like treacle.. when there is a something better, newer than SSD, W10.x or 11 or 12 will do the same to old SSDs..

Yes, cynical. It's much more likely that a complex OS like W10 needs to make far more random read/write operations to disk, something that SSDs do as well as linear read/writes but which rotating disks with their moving heads and rotational latency struggle to match.

PC still running the circle around and around. Mouse pointer still unresponsive This is now around 20 hours after Shut down with updates and turning back on
Turn off for a while, turn on and pray ?

That does seem a long time. You're not supposed to turn a machine off which is updating, so that wouldn't help.
What does it say exactly?

I've updated four, two laptops and two PCs. One PC did like yours, and it took me about six tries before I got all the updates set up. I'd restart the computer and try again.

If the mouse pointer is unresponsive I'd be inclined to say that the machine had locked up and possibly the only solution would be a hard reboot. Martin?

That does seem a long time. You're not supposed to turn a machine off which is updating, so that wouldn't help. What does it say exactly? About 24 hours now An almost blank, black screen with a stationary mouse pointer and the little circle updating sign going round and round Unresponsive to mouse movements, Escape, Enter, Ctrl Alt Del or being called shithead I am too well aware that the big red (little black) switch can make things worse, although this is unlikely to ever stop

You may have to bite the bullet and force it off (press the power button for 10s). It should resume when you start it up.

Here goes.... Fingers crossed.
Don't want to explain to the boss that I did her a favour by updating and broke her PC

Unresponsive to mouse movements, Escape, Enter, Ctrl Alt Del or being called shithead. I can also testify to the fact that, generally speaking, computers do not respond to b*st*rd, f*cker, f*ck*ng b*st*rd, or any variations on that theme. Nor do they start working properly when a thump with the fist is coupled with the incantation "b*ll*ks!"

Good, that sounds promising.
They have done quite a lot to get updates to complete even through a hard lockup.

Just keep cycling it until they're done. You'll have a better more secure W10 at the end of it.

Here's an odd one for you, Martin. Microsoft are promoting the 'all-new' Windows 1.0 launch. That's Windows ONE. Windows seems to be sticking to its latest obsession by changing its social media profile pictures to the Windows 1.0 logo. On Instagram it's even gone one step further and erased all content that isn't about Windows 1.0. Both channels have also started pushing Windows 1.0 content. These posts include quizzes about the memory required to run Windows 1.0 in 1985, and a look at the exciting programs the operating system will run "this summer". www.creativebloq.com/news/windows-10?ref=webdesignernews.com
