This is the bug that got me on my work machine. It's a Group Policy issue so is not the cause of the deleted documents bug hitting home users.

Things had all become rather slow in my aged Lenovo x200 bedroom laptop..
I decided to bite the bullet and do a refresh.
It took a while, cleared a load of clutter and my Enterprise MS office licence with it. It ran and ran post Nokia meltdown. I'd forgotten it was from that long ago!!
I tried Gnumeric. Not great, couldn't open any sheet with password protection, couldn't make PDF's. Not very excel to look at.
Then I read an open office Vs LibreOffice bake off in the Guardian.
They recommended LibreOffice. More support and developers.
Once installed it opened passworded speadsheets, easy to make PDFs. I had to redo a couple of hyperlinks links by assigning them as buttons. It looks like MS Excel and it works like it.
Really pleased with it. Fast, full functionality (I need) and free!
I need to figure out whether to save the sheets in ODC or keep in MS Excel. Both seem to work.
Word replacement looks good to. Yet to try PowerPoint equiv.
Bye bye MS office..
Laptop is now fast to boot and exhibits lower CPU and disk usage..

I've been using Apache Open Office for ages, with good results. I haven't tried Libre Office before so I've downloaded it to take a look.
It's got a slightly larger footprint than Open Office, but it's still only 15%-20% of M$ Orifice, which weighs in at about 3Gb with whistles and bells i.i.r.c.

Thanks guys. I use Gmail but would like to use some Outlook features I was used to in my past life. Maybe because it is the tool I was familiar with. Has to be oh so easy and never go wrong

Software is going more towards subscription now. I'm thinking seriously of moving my school to Office 365, away from Office 2016. I already have it on my Surface tablet. It's like Windows 10, being continuously updated with new features. We also get an excellent educational (campus) discount if we select just the right package, away from the corporate choices. I should be able to make some savings overall on the deal.

For me as a casual home user I want it free or as free as possible I must say Libre is delivering so far.

Don't forget there are purely online options available from Google and Microsoft. Also free, and both tied into cloud storage to keep things easy.

No - you get 5GB free. I do buy extra OneDrive space for all my documents, though, as I don't keep anything local on any machine now.

Yesterday was 'Patch Tuesday' and W10 1809 has been properly fixed. I do like all the subtle shadow and motion effects, makes it look, err, deep.

I like the similarly useful "use PrtSc button to open snipping tool" feature.

When visiting Microsoft seminars I sometimes realise there is so much on offer but most of it is hidden from home users who just shout at their laptop when Windows is not performing at their behest.
The services on offer from Azure are simply mind blowing. I am now drawing up a 5-year plan to migrate virtually everything - e-mail, files, shares, virtual machine replicas, Active Directory authentication, applications, webfeeds - to the cloud. There will come a time within that period where what we can offer teachers and students outside of our network will be exactly the same as inside. No matter where they are, their files and applications will remain available. Truly seamless computing. Domains will die out, to be replace with Device Affinity and User Affinity.
This is going to take me neatly to retirement. I love a challenge!
I asked a question yesterday about how much storage we could have as part of our new style Microsoft 365 for Education agreement. The reply, delivered so casually that I had to ask them to repeat it, was 1PB. Yes, that's one quadrillion bytes of storage. Free.
