Open a CMD prompt as administrator and type wuauclt.exe /updatenow followed the enter key. That should normally force W10 to load and install. Doesn't do anything when I try it.. has anyone actually got the official 'go ahead' yet ?

Latest story:
I checked the update history and it seems that my PC has 3 times tried to install Windows 10, and each time failed with error 80240020. Needless to say there's no such error listed on the Microsoft site ! I will be trying manually in a moment.
stanleyb - what product code did you use - was it your existing (not win10) one ?

Latest story: I checked the update history and it seems that my PC has 3 times tried to install Windows 10, and each time failed with error 80240020. Needless to say there's no such error listed on the Microsoft site ! I will be trying manually in a moment. If you had error 80240020 then go to www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and scroll down till you see one of two files to download. 32 bit or 64 bit, depending on your PC. Download the appropriate one and install it. Instructions on how to use it are at windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install?ocid=ms_wol_win10I tried that option as well and it works even better. WARNING: Make sure you backed up your PC before you do any of this. Use MS backup since that is already installed on your PC. I am now onto testing data recovery mode. So I have deliberately crashed one of my machines and I am now going to try to recover the drive and its boot manager. I tend to do that at least once with a new OS so that I am aware of any problems with the recovery process and compatibility with my existing recovery tools. I don't like to find out a few months or years down the line that I have no idea how to rescue a crashed machine.

The story so far:
Forget third party back up programs like Acronis and Paragon for now. None of them are able to restore from a W10 backup. No such problem with Microsoft Image Backup. It is however a bit of a pain initially to figure out.

It's in Control Panel | File History and is called System Image Backup. The beauty of it is that Windows Images can do Bare Metal Recovery, so that you can restore them to different hardware. I've done it lots of times and it's by far the easiest way to upgrade your installation to a new machine.

Edge is no good for me. Some of my banking etc security programs rely on the private windows option of IE and FF.

Yup... This is a concern...OS as Adware/Malware/Spyware. I was all set to install it, downloaded the ISO and put it on a USB stick. Great... Then I saw this: i.imgur.com/iHge6RJ.jpgread up on Windows 10 privacy and make a judgement. In the wake of Snowdon etc we are sleepwalking into something NOT good. I'm always wary when someone dangles something shiny under my nose for free... Not installing it until this is addressed. If ever. *EDIT* Excerpt from MS Privacy Statement... "Finally, we will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary..." Fuck off Microsoft.

It seems Microsoft really do want everything, INCLUDING the kitchen sink. And despite all of that I still installed the bloody thing. First only one monitor was working and that was at a very basic level. Fortunately I have kept an older, rock solid GeForce driver which installed perfectly and gave me both monitors again. No internet. Thank Gawd for a tablet and a USB lead. That enabled me to prove to myself it was the wifi card driver, and ultimately the card itself that was outdated. Ordered a new USB wifi dongle and got it overnighted by Amazon. Plugged it in today and instant internet. Once I had the internet up Windows could start downloading stuff in the background...including a duff GeForce driver which I only found out about due to being back to one monitor. At least the screen res stayed put this time. Neither a downloaded new driver or my old "good" driver wanted to install. I rebooted and suddenly NVIDIA's GeForce Experience was telling me that I now had a " GeForce Windows 10 Driver" (353.62 apparently for anyone keeping score.) Back to 2 monitors again and I was happy again. Bootup is slower than my previous Windows 7 Ultiimate installation. I've had a couple of temporary freezes. Found out how to get a coloured ribbon at the top of my opened folders etc. For someone used to Windows 7 this Windows 10 comes across as a pretty ugly beast at worst. If I was being kind I'd call it "plain" I suppose. I'm now going to relax for a while before I start to find out which bits of my sofware have been buggered by Win 10.

Gaz, if you really think that Apple and Google (don't do evil) are any different then you are living an illusion. Just accept that the big three will, to an extent, do as they wish and get on with using a superior Operating System. Life is too short for paranoia, the governments already know everything. Keep that in mind and you'll be fine.
