Art School Girlfriend - Is It Light Where You AreArt School Girlfriend is the performing name of singer/songwriter Polly Mackey from Wales. Her background is in the shoegaze genre and I would describe her music as shoegaze with more of a synth edge and making use of lots of sound textures. She also writes and composes very well, creating soundscapes that really gel with me, not so much for background listening (Engineers would be a good example of shoegaze for driving), but fully attentive listening. She signed with Wolf Tone Records in 2017 under Paul Epworth and this is her first full album, released in 2021. She performs with session musicians on many of the tracks, filling out the sound. Polly’s singing voice is almost as breathy as Goldfrapp’s and, combined with her synth textures, makes for a compelling whole with complex swirling atmospherics, sometimes very potent bass lines, and music that draws you in to create a calming mood. Set against many similar electronic-based wannabees (e.g. Elise Trouw), she shines and I have found myself playing this album a lot since I discovered it a couple of years ago. For me, the standout creations are Give, Eyes on You and Softer Side. Also try Is It Dark Where You Are, an accompanying album of remixes. open.qobuz.com/album/i24ck42xch4mb

Sorry, not for me. The kindest way I can describe it would be "bland". It reminded me of the music from every young adult targeted american TV series from 20 years ago.
A *2* for not being awful.

It must be me, I hear much more than 'bland' but, to be fair, others have expressed the same opinion as you.
Her voice, synth soundscapes and bass lines are really pleasing to my ears. Oh well, can't win them all!

I am with Paul it's just to middle of the road for me, even though it's well recorded. It is just not for me. Sorry Martin a 1 for me.

Oh well, can't win them all! As we've said often enough, it would be a boring old world if everybody liked the same thing all the time.

Playing this now and at first signs, I don't think I'm going to be giving it a 5/5. But we shall see!

So it's confirmed: no-one likes Art School Girlfriend except me!
Each to their own, I guess. I'll keep treading my own path.

We all thread our on path. I think if I get one person to like a choice I made I will see this as success.

A very pleasant Friday evening listening while doing random nothings on the laptop. Headphones via a MacBook Air.
Certainly worth another few listens.

Listening on phone / best BT headphones Sony make..
The music is okay. Bit chill for me . I like some get up and go. Vocal is a bit bland but not unpleasant, suits the music I suppose.
Not bad for calming a troubled mind, but I want energy and to be wowed by dynamics or melodies or bass, or a combination of all 3 ,when I listen to my hifi.
3/5 for me. It might grow on me a bit, but I'll probably only listen again to the one or two tracks that stood out a bit.
Fashion tip: She should dye her hair purple or something to be more Art School GF🙂
