Hi I usually use Paul Barker but couldnt log in using that user name so Ive included my middle initial.
still love the Briggs Baffle dimensions.
listening to quad 57’s today. My field coil baffles are still in existence. But need to mount the field coils again, and loving the Quad’s so not in a hurry. No room for two sets of baffles Briggs dimensions in same room.
Had a stroke last Tuesday and the physio therapist said, “get back to scratch building and designing valve amplifiers” I cant argue with that. My stroke is CAA, herreditory I have bad dna, who knew?

Ive recently built a Triode connected EL38, I highly recommend the EL38 It has a very strong sound it doesnt require much voltage gain as it is pretty good mu but also it is pretty good transconductance, so you could drive a 211 or 212 or 801@ or 833b into class a2 direct coupled CF. But at the moment it is my amplifier for listening to. It should be a better driver than an el84 and that is saying something. Atm it is resistor auto biased, but as the bias voltage is -20v and the current around 62mA. I should in theory (not proved) achieve a good result forward biasing from a EZ80 one plate . Should then have correct amount of bass. ATM the cathode resistor is only bypassed with 50uF because most of the modern pio caps Ive ordered that probably source country China are full of dents and imperfections so I daren’t expose them to voltage. I have learned modern polyprops are made pretty shakey. There are loads of parts not made in a fashion that gives you confidence these days.

Hello Paul and welcome to TAS. Sorry about the stroke, but keeping your brain active is the best way forward.
The EL84 is not a bad output valve either, fantastic vocal qualities.
I don't do valves any more but I really liked the Leak Stereo 20 among others.

Welcome Paul hope things continue to progress with your recovery . I also use Quad ESL57and as you say they are just wonderful to listen to . All your musings on valves are way over my head but they shown That your thinking process is still working well .

Thanks. I had a surprise when I bought a used mm phono stage broadcast quality. You cant here the solid state its made with. It gets out of the way and lets the 57’s sing.
