July (2) 2024 - Jethro Tull - Living in the Past (1972)
Here now, and for the first time (in 10 years and close to 200 TAS Album Choices!), I bring you Jethro Tull. I remember purchasing this album shortly after it was released in 1972 and then listening to it over and over again. I had just begun a new job just outside New York City and songs from the original line up of Jethro Tull filled my small apartment for many hours. Fast forward to today where a digital copy is now rendered through a system many orders of magnitude improved over what I had back then. The presentation is immensely more clear and the quality of the music allowed to shine through much more brightly. Living in the Past Review by Bruce Eder: Listen to this collection, put together to capitalize on the explosive growth in the group's audience after Aqualung, and it's easy to understand just how fine a group Jethro Tull was in the early '70s. Most of the songs, apart from a few heavily played album tracks ("Song for Jeffrey," etc.) and a pair of live tracks from a 1970 Carnegie Hall show, came off of singles and EPs that, apart from the title song, were scarcely known in America, and it's all so solid that it needs no apology or explanation. Not only was Ian Anderson writing solid songs every time out, but the group's rhythm section was about the best in progressive rock's pop division. Along with any of the group's first five albums, this collection is seminal and essential to any Tull collection, and the only compilation by the group that is a must-own disc. Used to like them when Mick Abrahams was in the band - a while back
A band I ought to like but don't
Time to add to my playlist and give another go

I am listening to this album now. I finding it music very much of its time and unfortunately don't find myself feeling engaged with the music. I am afraid at present a not for me, sums it up

I haven’t played this for a long time, but I like Jethro Tull a lot and play many of the other albums quite often. I have this on both LP and CD and have given it, “about time” from memory and will adjust once I have had the chance to listen to it again.

I just spent over a week in Suffolk with my best mate who's a huge Tull fan, I mean BIG. He's got everything they've ever made, plus loads of bootlegs . . . as a result I'm a bit Tulled out right now, but I'll give it a spin when I've equalised a bit.
He's probably got more Tull albums than most people have albums!

I've known of this album for a long time but never actually had it in my collection.
Not being a huge Tull fan, I've tried to approach this from a fresh viewpoint and it certainly seems to contain much of their best work. Very recognisable and decently recorded (or should I say compiled), I've found myself spending a decent slice of time in its company. Many songs bring back memories from the 1970s, none more so than Living in the Past, an absolute classic. Thoughts of times past and feeling a combination of nostalgia and relief. Life would never be quite so straightforward again.
Giving it 4/5 and thanks for the memories.

Pretty much what Martin said, except I actually have had it in my collection for ages, along with most of their other albums. I still remember "discovering" thiose early singles while at school. Great memories, great album almost 5/5 but not quite.

Like others I have not played this for a while, but it does get a spin every few years or so. IMHO it is a well produced collection from the previous 5 albums, my vinyl version is very in terms SQ which is great, I always enjoy listening to and find it quite a relaxing listen. A sound 4/5 from me, thanks for the selection.
