It's the first time I've come across eBay acting this way, so I thought I'd mention it. I put a bid in on a private sale, and after a while I got a notification it had been accepted. Now, normally I'd jump in and complete the transaction. No, eBay had already completed the transaction for me, and charged my PayPal account. When I looked closer the " reply" I received was telling me that my item had been dispatched. (NOT! ) When I checked my "Purchases" page the item is marked: Order dispatched Order date: 30 Jun, 2024 Order total: £.xxxx.xx (Auto-paid)So, word of warning, if you bid on something, make sure you actually do want it, because reneging on bids gets one into their bad books, and cancelling payments ditto I should imagine.

Did you make a best offer?
That's how it works now on eBay, seemingly too many people putting offers in which is accepted which ends the listing then backing out when they come to pay.
So the seller now has the option to set any best offers that are auto accepted to instant payment.
I'm sure when you put an offer in on some items it tells you that the condition of your offer is that you agree to immediate payment. However its easy to miss that warning and you won't know about it until the seller accepts your bid/offer, which kicks in the auto payment.
The Dispatch notification is another automated notification that occurs as soon as the seller buys the postage via eBay whether or be Evri, Parcelforce etc and adds the tracking to the sale page.

As far as I know, I made the ONLY offer. The last time I put an offer in on something, which was eventually refused, I got asked to verify my payment method, but there was no mention of autopay when I did that, and tonight it just told me that my offer had been sent to the seller, which is why I was surprised to find I'd already paid for it when I " won" it.

The seller would have set an amount that he would be happy to accept, if you offer that then it's automatically accepted. The seller can also manually accept an amount below his best offer setting, which is maybe why there was a delay in acceptance.
It's how I do my buy it now sales on ebay. Set an asking slightly over what you'd be happy to take for the item and then set my best offer price below that, within that option I can set it to immediate payment.
The instant payment is set by the seller not the buyer.

Once you have setup auto pay once it then uses it all the time for offers.

Interesting that vendors seem to be well informed about the change, but buyers, not so much.

Another little warning:
I made a bid on a guitar case which was accepted and "auto-paid" but, as I'd made the bid from the eBay site, and not via Nectar, I got no option to claim the Nectar points.
I need to change my browsing habits and enter eBay via Nectar every time, just in case...

Yes, I'm making a habit of doing that. I usually shop for what I want on the desktop or laptop, put it in the basket and then use the Nectar app on the phone to go in and buy it.
Bidding requires doing it from the phone, I guess.

That was the way I was doing it, put it in the basket and then go to Nectar, but of course, when bidding, if you win, there is no further option now with " autopay". You don't need to swap to your phone though, just go to the Nectar site via the same browser you use on the laptop or desktop, log in, and go to eBay from there.

I use quidco to get "cashback" on ebay... It seems to follow the same pattern as Nectar.... I shop freely from whichever device without a thought for quidco... fill the basket. When it is time to buy. I explicitly login to quidco, click through to ebay and complete the purchase.
On a similar topic I have a trading212 account, while this is first and foremost a low cost app based stockbroker.... money in their account pays 5% interest* and they have a mastercard which can be physical (costs a fiver or so) or virtual and pays 1.5% cashback for a few months and then 0.5% afterwards. The BIG BENEFIT is that as far as I can tell the money continues to earn interest up to the moment you spend it on the card. This has always been the holy grail for me. Money can be transferred in pretty much instantly and takes 3 days to transfer out if you need it back. Payments are nearly** identical to any other card and flash up notifications in the app. I now push nearly all my income and outgoings through this route.
ONE WARNING WHILE, DAY TO DAY, THIS LOOKS AND ACTS LIKE A BANK ACCOUNT IN MOST COMMON ASPECTS, IT IS NOT AND YOU DO NOT HAVE THE NORMAL PROTECTION FROM THE GOVERNMENT IF THEY GO BOINK
* to get this level of "interest" you have to tick a box which means the money is often held in "money market" devices such high quality bonds and overnight deposits. In general, in terms of risk, this is as near to cash as you can get without it actually being cash.
** Trading212 themselves admit that there are a small number (1%?) of businesses which do not accept their card. I use it daily and the post office is the only one I've found so far. Initially, it did not support android/apple pay, but I believe this has been resolved.
Cheers
Sean
