I've been a budding audiophile since I was in 8th grade (1970) and bought my 1st record. I started taking off borrowing records to play on my parent's Magnavox monstrous all-in-on TV-radio-stereo console & rigged up long speaker wires to go to the cheapo Superscope (JBL) 2-ways I bought to put in my room.
Soon I was assembling my own setup (Dual-AudioTechnica-Yamaha). Then as I started educating myself with The Absolute Sound, Stereophile, the Audio Critic, International Audio Review, and Audio Amateur, along with rubbing shoulders with some of the area audiophiles and audio engineers, I DIY'd some KEF T27/B110 speakers, upgraded to a Grado & then Win Labs Strain Gauge cartridge, and there was no turning back!
From nearly day one I've been a tweaker / modifier / gear builder, solid state & tube, analog and once it got good enough that I could stand it, digital. I've highly modified and/or built turntables / arms / cartridges, amps, phono and line preamps, CD/DVD players, computer music players, speakers/crossovers, and various tweaks like powerline filtering and various vibration control measures like stands and supports.
I am currently running 2 setups. Both are anchored with PS Audio P15 Regenerators and BHK-250 amps and include various passive volume controls, DIY'd digital players, Eminent Technology planar magnetic speakers, and hopefully soon to be re-setup Well-Tempered Labs Reference turntables with ET-2.5 air bearing tonearms and various cartridges and phono stages.
I discovered this site researching the latest info on my Gustard R26. I had gotten it in late 2022 based on the buzz & liking the characteristic R2R sound (I have a couple of tweaked-out Soekris DAM DACs which were top of my digital chain for a short while, but they were ultimately limited by the awful clocking system the designer is so proud of).
Not long after I got it, I lent my R26 to my friend Ian Canada to compare with his Holo Spring 3. Based on what he heard, he tweaked his DIY HDMI source board to work well with the R26's HDMI input. He compared the R26 to his Spring 3 fed from his HDMI, liked what he heard, and found them roughly comparable.
I just received it back from him along with his updated HDMIProII setup.
Based on what I've read here and on the monster Head-Fi thread on the R26, I have a lot of new things to try with the unit together with Ian's HDMI source, including a Leo Bodnar clock I have incoming. Thanks to all for that info from here.
TAS looks like a very informative and friendly site with little of the subjective versus objective back and forth that have plagued some other sites where I used to spend time.
Looking forward to learning and sharing here!
