I have been a huge John Martyn fan since early in his career seen him live about ten or so times with often mixed results depending on his state of sobriety or drug intake . When he is in good form he flies and you are taken to another place . When he is bad he can be awful . Now this is a bit of a cheat as it is two tracks but they are both from the same session . Transatlantic Sessions was as series made by BBC and Canadian TV presenter by Aly Bain and featured artists from UK , IS , and Canada collaborating over folk tunes and their own material . John featured in the first and second series . In the first one he performs older material May You Never , Sold Air and Spencer the Rover . These are all good but the CD for that series are almost impossible to find or expensive . They are though on Tidal not sure about Qobuz or Spotify . But on the second series John sings two tracks from his Church With One Bell album which is a covers album and for me just magic . On this session he does He,s Got All The Whisky with Eddie Reader and Mister Mister the Ben Harper song . Both are just stunning and obviously lived performances the arrangement and singing is just amazing and shows when clean John is truly great vocalist with a very distinctive sound . If you get the chance give these a listen . I managed to get a copy of both these CD,s so they are now in my Library but I did play them on Tidal as well . Bonus in buying the CD was that James Grant another favourite of mine gives a great version of his song Cure for Life I think accompanied by Emmy Lou Harris which is never a bad thing .

Mike try a search for Aly Bain as he was the presenter of the series . On Tidal when I used his name and clicked albums they were all listed . Sorry not really used Qobuz so not sure how the search works .

Slightly frustrated now as I bought the Volume one CD from Discogs but when it arrived the cover was for Volume one but the CD inside was Volume two which I already have . Sent a message to the seller and will see what I get back . In the mean time I will look around on e-bay and else where for another copy .

I love John Martyn's published recordings (presumably filtered as someone was there saying "John, you're off your head again, we can't put this out"...) and saw him live only once. One of my heroes to this day.
I saw the John Martyn Project a couple of years ago in Kendal and it would be easy (lazy?) to dismiss this as a tribute band in all the bad ways... but it felt like a genuine tribute and the musicianship was extraordinary. I tired of the male singer who liked to do a warble more appropriate to Pop Idol, but the young long-haired guitarist not only nailed the stringwork he also did a quite remarkable job of the subtleties of John's voice.
In 2023, I went to Buxton for the Transatlantic Sessions with Aly Bain; an amazing evening which felt more like a jam session in the local pub than a seated/ticketed performance. No John Martyn obviously (!) but highly recommended if you get the chance.
